I'm looking for active yeast but seems no one is supplying it in RSA through normal means. Of course I can make my own yeast (wild), but that is a story for another time.

Note: This is for baking and not brewing. I don't have any brewing skills, it is still a pending project.

Any homebrew shop? Or am I not understanding- is there a difference between alive and active?
What exactly is it that you want to use the yeast for?

Yeah homebrew/beerbrew might have, idk.

I think OP is looking for fresh yeast...
I suppose you can call it that, but active is still dehydrated afaik.

What are you looking to do? My local Spar is usually more than happy to sell me some of their fresh yeast. So is the local micro brewery...

Use active yeast instead of instant yeast. I'll ask the spar across the road...

I'm also trying to source some. It appears that Anchor produce it but it is not part of their consumer range.

Like posted - my local bakery, as well as Checkers and PnP bakeries are always happy to sell me some fresh yeast when I ask them.

Our Spar and even the small OK sells it, hardly been to any other store during the lockdown.

I thought it was quite clear, it is exactly what I want to do. There is no obfuscation or vagueness:

Currently using instant yeast.
Currently making my own wild yeast.
Want to stop using instant yeast.
Want to start using active yeast instead.

Do I really need to type out the odd 10 - 20 things I bake for myself?

It's becoming the 1+1=2 now

Why not just build and feed a yeast starter to use?
Its not overly difficult and it works very well, my father in law has been making his sour dough bread for many years on the same starter, just keeps it going by feeding it.

I am, but have you done it from scratch in the winter? I'm just about to pop it into the incubation chamber I use for my bread...

Also keep in mind that there is a difference between active yeast and a sourdough culture, which also contains bacteria and the bread you make from them differ quite a bit, although I suspect you know this if you are sufficiently into baking to own an incubator.

If you're after a sourdough starter and in Centurion, I'm willing to share some of mine - imported from San Francisco a year or so ago

You might be making your own yeast for brewing or you might be making your own yeast for baking.

You eventually got around to mentioning baking so that cleared that one up - thanks. Hope the spar has what you need
