How long did Telkom take to install your ADSL?

Hi all

Finally broke and got ADSL as no one supplies Pinelands (in Cape Town) with decent wireless that will not "potentially be capped soon". Anyway I just wanted to know how long an average installation takes ... and no not how long Telkom tells me it will take but how long its taken for people to get their lines put in (btw they told me 3 weeks for the ADSL department to determine if my line is ADSL ready and another 2 weeks for the install  ).

Now I already have a line so it just needs to be made "ADSL ready" .. gota love Telkom terminology ... so how long has it taken for you guys out there for Telkom to put in ADSL. I registered on the 3rd of Jan and am wondering if I'll be waiting for a month .. or three

OsireS, based purely on what I have read and heard from others, installation can take just a few days to never.

Best to ask others in your suburb how long it took for their ADSL to be installed. I wouldn't advise using, as a reference, the time frames given by people in other parts of the country.

I am no expert but it seems to me that installation times vary according to suburb and Telkom employees servicing that suburb.

[Also keep in mind that there are some people out there who have been waiting the better part of a decade to get just a phone line. Anything is possible with Telkom.]

A little piece of advice: try to get the phone number of the technician assigned to installing your ADSL. Telkom does not provide their technicians with much cellphone airtime, and technicians often are forced to use their own cellphone airtime to call customers to inform them that they will be arriving. The end result of this is that most technicians simply don't bother to call the customer (and I don't blame them either, Telkom should provide them with the airtime they need to carry out their jobs sufficiently). So you would do well to be proactive and call the technician yourself (maybe let him know he/she is welcome to send you a 'pls call me' if needs be). I know this sounds ridiculous, and you shouldn't have to do this, but unfortunately that is just the way Telkom is. If you don't want to be sitting at home waiting for a tech who never arrives, be sure to do this.

Hey OsireS,

I'm also in Pinelands. It'll two weeks on friday since I applied. They have done the compliance testing, but the order is still with planning to get them to assign a port in the DSLAM. I bug them every day. I've had the call escalated three times now, but nothing seems to be happening. I've requested a Self Install, and after they told me that they don't do it in the Southern Suburbs I bugged them until they let me have it. With Self install you don't need to wait for the tech to come round.

feel free to msg me anything that happens, I'll keep you posted about my application.
