Yet another comparrison question:

I am planning on running a system with the following (As many of you probably kow):

- Phenom II 965 be
- 4Gb DDR3 RAM
- 1 Tb HDD
- GeForce 460GTX 768mb GPU

I am going to be using the system for gaming and am in the process of selecting a PSU for the system.

Sharkbait is running a few similar systems with a bit of oc etc and is very happy with the Gigabyte ODIN 585W PSU +-R500

I know that it is not certified. Thus is it necessary to spend another R350-R500 to get either a certified 550W coolmaster or corsair PSU.

IMO the Gigabyte Odin is crap.Rather spend that R350-R550 extra on something decent with the knowing that your components won't give in because of a poor make PSU.

I'm talking about the 585W Odin. You check and see if it's got any effiency rating. If you do get one let me know cause I had one and couldn't find it.It's better to get a PSU with a decent effiency rating.Oh and that 585w is peak rated.Normal wattage flow on is 460w....

IIRC, it had a 80% effiency (actually efficiency :) ) sticker on it. All I am saying, I had a couple of these PSU and just bought another 2 now and never had any problems with them. I'd rather go with something I trust.

"Certified" as in, 80+ certified?

TBH the ODIN series are excellent PSUs, not the highest end, but I'd definitely put them ahead of Coolermaster's cheaper offerings.

Thing is, lloydkayak is buying on a budget and that is why I am suggesting this psu. Like I told him, when you are buying high end, eg. GTX 480, you obviously will have the cash as well to buy high end PSU. For his purposes and budget, this is more than enough.

On a budget, the Odien should be ok. I'd really rather spend the few extra bucks and get a 550W Corsair. They have a 5-yr warranty and are rock-solid.

If you're willing to spend R2000 on a graphics card you should be willing to spend more than R500 on a PSU. Go for a 450-500w Corsair PSU.

Here we go again. The 550w (don't see a 500w) Corsair is going for almost R1k. Sure, you can shop around and save maybe R100, but the GTX 460 768 is the best BANG-4-BUCK you can buy now and unfortunately we have to pay R2k for it. And since he is buy a complete pc, the R500 difference between the Odin and Corsair can be spent more wisely somewhere else.

What you guys are saying is, buy a lower spec pc, so that you can buy a better/higher spec PSU, but why buy a better/higher spec PSU when you are running low end hardware.

The Gigabyte Odin's ARE CRAP there's no denying it. A good budget power supply is the cooler master GX 550watt. The GX series is better then the extreme power series they also have.

My Corsair VX450W cost me about R700 and is a brilliant PSU. Has enough cables, they are long enough, is quiet, produces lots of power, and its very stable.

The thing is I dont recommend buying something absurd like a 700W PSU. Some people think they need wattage like that, 95% of people dont. I'd rather buy a quality PSU that actually produces its stated watts. My friend is running a CX400 which cost him about R500 - works fine. Better to buy the best quality PSU you can afford than the highest wattage rated PSU you can afford. The Gigabyte 585 is in fact a 460, and even then since it wont be as efficient as my Corsair, who knows what it will actually produce? And what happens if our amazing South African electrical system gives you a voltage spike?

I mention buying on a budget because I don't really want to go over R10k for the amount of time I will spend gaming and the fact that in 2 years I will need to upgrade anyway.

I do recognise however the fact that screen, mouse, keyboard and PSU are all components that if you buy quality once, they will last a bit longer than performance parts.

I can get the 80% certified 550W cooler master GX for around R800, its this or R1k for the corsair

I believe this will be enough to safely run my system and updgrades as I doubt I will ever go for higher end components simply keeping up with the latest tech every 2 years or so

Not going over 10k and still want quality components? My rig was 10.4k and look what I got...Corsair PSU included. All I'm saying is don't skimp on a PSU..;)

Just curious - I assume that legend system was R10k without a kb,mouse and screen... Not disputing that its supreme...nice system

Look, feel free to use the cheapest PSU in your system. But dont come crying to us if your system gives you random restarts/BSODs/etc, or worst case burns one of your components. Spend another R200 - R300 and get something decent. The whole system depends on that one piece of hardware. What you are doing is buying a Ferrari and then putting cheapy 11" wheels from an Uno on it.

I am definately on board with the cheap PSU problem.

I had decided to take the CM 550W GX which is power certified to 80%

Not enough for this system>

Can a PSU be an overkill? Like can you have a PSU that can damage your rig because it's too powerful like 1200W?
