Adobe Creative Suite software moves to cloud-only subscription model

I've been using adobe muse for a while and it uses the subscription model. What a mission. Billing is choppy and over priced.

How is this going to work? I take it, it isn't a cloud application in that all the data is in the cloud, just a subscription service? Can't imagine having to upload bigger RAW files ;-)

I saw this as well. Some advertising companies are going to feel the pinch.

Ouch, this will hurt the creative industry, more so for the smaller companies, let alone the strain it will put on the bandwidth.

Sure you can get Fibre or 10mb lines, but i don't think this will work in SA, well not at this point in time anyhow.

My 2c, and sticking to CS5

Im not sure but doing the math it seems really good to me. I have taken a subscription. Lets say I go to the store and purchase a boxed version of Master Edition - I'd have to pay about R17500 for CS6. This will NOT include all the applications available like MUSE and other apps to sync and test with my iPhone and iPad.

If I take the subscription. Its works out to R5400 a year, that will take me 3 years to have paid off Master Edition. Yet this was I get all new updates, more software and I don't have to fork out a huge amount of capital.

Im sure I can do a job every month to cover the R450 subscription cost - hell one website can cover a years subscription.

I am enjoying the subscription account over a boxed version AND I can install it on my Mac at home and have the settings synced.

I bet all those people who swear they are sticking to previous CS Suites will join the subscription sooner or later as they will want the newer software eventually - Its all a matter of time.

I for one welcome the new Adobe CC

That's all probably true but say you're a photographer who only wants Lightroom. You're going to be paying a lot more for that one app than you would have if you had purchased a new (not upgrade) version every year.

Box version of light room = $149 ($79 upgrade)
CC version = $19x12= $288 per year.

The Master Collection CS6 costs $3.159 which is about R29,000. That's the download version.

I went to apply for the student/lecturer creative cloud price ($30/month). Guess what? They don't provide it in SA. Really, SA and other smaller countries always get shortchanged.

Suggest you write to Adobe and also write to the Canadian government asking why they are discriminating against people of colour who live in the developing world. Ask them if that goes with the spirit of Canada.

They will probably bluster and in typical hypocritical fashion. But it's worth a shot.

Ok, I'll bite, what does a company founded by two Americans and headquartered in California have to do with Canada?

It's not just that. I can see a number of issues with the approach:

1) People only want product X and not the whole suite.
2) Some people only upgrade when they get a new feature. Now they are paying for upgrades whether they want them or not.
3) Internet and SA, need I say anything more.
4) You are tied to them. If you stop paying, you stop using the application. You don't have a choice. They could double the pricing tomorrow and you would be forced to keep paying. It becomes a tax.

I can see why they are doing it. It's becoming increasingly difficult for them to add features that justify upgrades. The products are very good at the moment. I have seen it with a lot of older established products.

People also shouldn't take the new price and divide by X but rather use the upgrade price. One wouldn't buy a new package every few years, people normally buy an upgrade.

There are two differences between buying CS6 and the cloud option. Firstly, you can use CS6 for the next 10 years. You aren't forced to stop using it after 3 years. Same can't be said for the cloud option.

What if the subscription cost was R2000 per month? Is it still worthwhile? I can guarantee you that the fee won't stay R450 per month over the 3 years. It will go up and probably about 10% per year. All they have to do is change the file format to a new CS7 format and it's game over. You are forced to accept any price changes after that. It's a captive audience.

Even if the price goes up, i supose every business will have to look at wether its worth it or not. I doubt anyone would be using CS6 after 5 yrs as tech will change again and the tools will probaby be redundant by then. Its like using CS2 today, or CorelDraw 7. Using CS6 for the next 10 yrs is fine if u going to be doing what u do now.

There must be some sort of thin client that runs off the local machine? How would colour management work then?

The app itself is installed on the local computer.

No, the full apps get installed on your machine, cloud is ised for storage (like drop box) and other apps u can download, also the new Kuler app is intergrated via cloud.
