Anyone know on which doors to knock if me and the missus want to adopt?

We have been trying for yours to get pregnant but because of various medical reasons is seems like adoption would be our only option.

But the problem is, where do you go. I have googled and got a few hits, most of these agencies don't respond at all (one would think there is a dire need for people to adopt), they don't answer the phone or email. One agency told us to try again in 6 months, there list is too long. Another prime example actually tried to persuade us not to adopt because it can be a long stretched out process.

So please is there anyone with knowledge of a good adoption agency? This is the one thing my wife feels that everyone should experience and its the one thing that I unfortunately cannot help with (the pregnancy part of course).

Any contact or advice would be appreciated

I will speak to someone I know that offers temp fostering to see if she can perhaps offer contact details to someplace/one to help you with the adoption.

You could try the ACVV (Afrikaanse Christelike Vroue Vereniging) they seem to be Cape based though.

I was adopted at about 6 weeks, over 46 years ago, so they have been around for quite a while.
They were also very helpful when i was finally interested enough to try and locate my biological parents. Their handling of the situation was very professional, and their staff made all effort to ensure first contact was correct and went smoothly.

Good Luck

Bump.

Did you find an agency? Have you adopted yet?

Apparently there are around 1.8 million orphans in SA.

Although I suppose you want to adopt a baby not a 10 year old street urchin?

But again tons of orphans out there, so should not be a problem unless you have race preferences.

So I was not sure whether I should create a new thread or necro one but I figured there is some info here that might still be relevant and valuable.

Where do we start? From what I understand there is a register that you need to get onto in order to start the adoption process?

Any of you out there with some experience on the topic? I assume it must be quite a stressful time?

Mr brother adopted, I'll try get hold of him, wrangle some information out of him.

It was quite a lengthy process - they're in Durban and had to fly up to JHB a few times, had to get family pictures of themselves when they were kids etc.

Was well worth it in the end though - I've got one awesome little nephew.

why did they have to provide pictures when they were kids?

Yeah not quite sure, but I remember them having to basically give a dossier on themselves, painting a picture of their lives, family structure, where they grew up. I'll try get more details.

Oh, wait, I just remembered I adopted my oldest daughter. I'll dig out the details of the people involved and post them later.

That's really interesting. Thanks.

OK I remember now, so apparently the agency they went through, it wasn't a case of you get an already born baby that has perhaps been abandoned, it was a case of a pregnant mum that was giving her child up, and she got to choose the parents the child would go to. So the file was for her.
At least that's what I remember, typing it out it seems a wee bit odd.
