Hi Guys

please assist.

I've recently signed up for a Telkom 4Mbps ADSL line. when I tested the speed, I never get more than 1.5Mbps. a Telkom technician was sent out to have a look at the problem. apparently I am 6.4km's from the exchange and will never get anywhere near 4Mbps. is advice is that I change the package down to 2Mps and that will stabilize the connection a bit. what is saying that my quality of service will improve as my connection is not searching for 4Mbps but rather be stable on 2Mbps. Something about line noise and a few other things I don't understand.

after that long story, my questions are simple,

Will this improve the quality of my connection?
Can I get close to 4Mbps being 6.4 km's away from the exchange?

Take the speed down, but keep it on the 4mb package. Free calls to all Telkom numbers, 1GB mobile data VS R20 less and none of the aforementioned.

I agree that its not worth the R20 less, but if the line quality improves, I'm willing to let the other benefits go

If you have may we expect an apology?

Well shed some light then, wise one :p

BTW. Here's mine. Now only if Telkom can get rid of this mini ATM (or whatever they call it) . Then I can get more than 4mbps :(

I'm really really sorry guys, but i have no idea what all of that means. I'm a newby to all of this. is the service/speed i am getting worth the R599?

Your line is bad, but the package is not if you take advantage of the benefits. See CPU's comments , post #4.

But good luck in getting the integrated SIM working.

I have read horror stories about the integrated sim. But I want it so bad. Gonna try going into the store to get that sorted.

Mine was working fine for over a year. Decided to do the IDS, they issued me with a new SIM and now both don't work. Been back to the store twice and nobody can help me. So I cancelled my Telkom account now ....

Damn that sucks... And your stats are good enough for 20 :(

I feel guilty about my 100Mbps now

Sure you are :)

But I'm still happy with under 200ms to international gaming servers. What do you get on you super duper fat pipe ?

*** edit sorry OP for derailing a bit.

I never apologise. I’m sorry, that’s just the way I am.

Funnily enough I have vox fat pipe on it lol (edit: oh wait... u were in the vox thread)

I don't game... no idea what the latency is like. But I get 2ms to the gateway

about that, i have a company phone with 10 GB mobile data and unlimited calls, so no real need for the added benefit. Seems I'm screwed until fibre comes along.

attenuation-copper length db km-mbps.jpg

Hi Other Guy, your attenuation is 48,5 dB. That means the length of your copper wire to the exchange is 3,5 km … not 6,4 km. At 6,4 km your “speed” would be ZERO mbps.

At 3,5 km you’ll never get close to 4 mbps.

The way I understand it, your ADSL speed is affected by 3 things

1) Protocol overheads 15% – 20%. That alone brings my speed down from 4 mbps to 3,4 mbps.
2) Distance from the exchange. Further than 2 km is not good.
3) The thickness and quality of the copper wire.

I’m not an expert, but I think give the 2 mbps line a try. It should also cost you less. Telkom’s UnlimitedHome 4 mbps uncapped plan is R599, the 2 mbps uncapped is R593 per month. That’s only R6 difference, can you believe it?

I’m on Telkom’s 4 mbps “do Advanced” plan R559 per month. The 2 mbps “do Basic” plan is R409. That’s a big difference of R150. The data caps don’t bother me, Night Surfer is uncapped. Hehe.

2 mbps is not bad at all. Theoretically you can download a movie of 1,5 GB in 1 hour 42 minutes.
