I would say 90% of all users of ADSL services are download MP3's/warez/porn!
That's a lot of illegal software going around and messing things up for the rest of us.
I think there should be a poll with:

What do you use your ADSL for?
1) Normal Surfing & Email
2) Downloading illegal software/music
3) Surfing porn sites and beating the meat!

I think 2 & 3 will be the main ones

As I said:
I would say 90% but can be much more ;)

What do YOU use the internet for? Reading Lawyers Weekly online? How boring... If it weren't for pr0n and warez, no-one who wasn't a boring loser would even bother having internet!

ps: I sometimes use the internet for research purposes *cough* *cough*

I thought that the reason for pr0n and warez is because you're a boring loser....

What I don't understand is that most people wanting more than 15Gb per month can't be using there line for just surfing & emails.
I have seen stats for a internet cafe in Cape Town that has 15 pc's that are full most of the day/night (7 days a week) and they don't use more than 20Gb per month.
Thats with surfing/emails & the odd software downloads.

What I would like to know is what do most of you use your internet access for if you require such a lot of bandwidth?
Like got mini WiFi's to you friends etc.

Theres alot of unlicensed content out there too download *coff* *coff*

Last time I've read a couple of reports is that around 70% of the worlds bandwidth is p2p, this doesn't nessacarily mean all of it is illegal.

And yes, I have a monopoly on 3) I got paris hilton's video at LAST :D now I'm just looking for whats her name, big boobs, has hepititis b, blonde.... erf... baywatch... and patricia lewis.

Okay - so I typed out this whole post, and came to the conclusion that for me it's the tons on online gaming and demo downloads that consumes around 7GB a month. So I just posted the conclusion.

Of course I would bet that most of the peer-to-peer traffic is illegal. However, some of the top LEGAL bandwidth mucnchers:
1) Large legal downloads (either FTP/P2P) e.g. Fedora 3, Win2003 SP1 etc.
2) Streaming Audio/Video
3) IP telephony (Audio & Video)

Because the biggest problem is international bandwidth we should petition iburst and/or telkom to create "duty free" zones - servers in south africa from which downloads/streams are not counted towards the cap. For example, tucows, sa university public ftp servers, streaming 5fm etc. - maybe even have a duty free P2P network constrained to south africa geographically. The same with game servers.

Now thats a GREAT idea!!!!!!!!
Now just have to chat to the guys a JINX & CINX.
Yes, like they will help us :(

JINX & CINX do not have to be involved. Simple peering agreements, as well as a few servers that WBS run can make a big difference.

Servers will not be a problem as we can get them free from DELL,HP or IBM for a advert on the main site or something.
It's that darn Telkom lines to 1 dedicated server room that will kill it.

A leased line is a lot cheaper than a leased line +connection to Telkom ISP with CIR.
