ADSL = 90% illegal content!

In the end it doesn't matter what you use it for. It is nobody's business. Carriers should not concern them with what they carry and they should not be held responsible for what they carry. They should just do it at an affordable price. Cracking down (shaping for instance) is tantamount to censorship IMO. Unless they state exactly how and why they shape or censure the data they carry in order to empower the consumer to make a choice of service.

Government should make laws targeting websites and not the carriers of their content. If you put up a kiddies porn website and get busted, to jail with you china and down with your site.

If they want to file a suit against p2p users individually it is their business, but to exclude everybody from the legal uses of p2p (be they much more limited than the illegal ones) is equal to banning all books because some of them might contain lewd information.

Senseless...

oops, careful now antowan. you will get this site censored with that sort of "free" speech :D

I agree with antowan. It has nothing to do with anyone what I do online. AND as far as I understand, for an ISP to be able to tell that you are P2Ping, he also has access to all your other text-only traffic. (ie email)

I use Internet mainly for business purposes. I suppose that is what happens if you have been able to get broadband access forever. (I am 41 and an internet user for almost 17 years)

I do know that years ago, I used to use the internet to look at things not totally social exceptable, might it be of flesh or of jolly-rodger...

Nowerdays I find the internet a great asset to do my daily job, namely IT related. If I have a problem, all I need to do is 'google' it. My job made so easy!

A boring loser with pr0n and warez is a happy boring loser!

Mozie - One thing to consider is the fact that not all "PORN" is illegal. It might be a waste of bandwidth in your your opinion - but not illegal. It should also be born in mind that it is the internet's biggest money spinner and as such one of the reasons for the initial success of the internet.

I see the continuing growth of the internet - including the fact that broadband is now available in South Africa - due to p2p networks. Fair enough there may be illegal content transmitted through these networks - but it is the popularity of this kind of use that makes broadband possible for you!

In general I would imagine that it would be cheaper to use ISDN if you were simply doing a bit of surfing, mail and a few windows updates.

My main use for the internet is the transfering large databases as well as applications that I develop. I also do a large amount of remoting - however this is does not consume significant bandwidth. My monthly total usage usually varies between 60 & 100 Gigs.

If you just want a bit of surfing & email get ISDN

A large chunk of my traffic goes to video/audio streaming. (watch German TV) P2P is also an issue (German Movies) and upload of webpages.

I would say 90% of all users of ADSL services are download MP3's/warez/porn!
That's a lot of illegal software going around and messing things up for the rest of us.

I assume by "warez" you mean illegally copied/cracked programs etc? If yes, then of course it's illegal. But what makes you state blindly that downloading MP3's and porn is illegal? It CAN be illegal, but MAY NOT NECESSARILY be illegal. There are some bands that only ditribute their stuff on MP3. Ditto for video.

Furthermore, in a previous post you assumed that anybody downloading Open source stuff is just downloading Linux distro's. How wrong! First of all Open Source != Linux. Secondly most of the OS world's programs and updates work on downloads only. Go look at SouyrceForge how many projects there are, most quite legal to download. F'rinstance I wanted the latest version Open Office, but balked at the size of the download, and that is just 1 program (it's a biggy and I am currently on ISDN - intent on switching to some form of 24/7 "broad"-band offering)

And if you want to bring M$ into the conversation. Go see on THEIR website how many free downloads there are, especially with all the SP's and security patches.

Other things that I routinely up-/download are maps, mapping data, GIS data, genealogy data and I share photo's with others. Most of these are to/on overseas sites. All of which would eat heavily if not completely consume a 3 GB cap in short order.

It looks to me as if you are locked into a capped contract and now you are trying to justify your own actions by being "dog in the manger"?

Don't have a adsl account yet. I use the works pcs.
I am still waiting for telkom to install my ^%$% line.
It's been almost 2 months of phoning and waiting

All Gratefull Dead and Pearl Jam live concerts are available for download free, ignore things like the Wired creative commons CD or other small bands that release materiel for free in order to gain publicity, all of which are perfectly legal uses of p2p.

? Porn = Illegal ?

Im confused...
Can the cops lock (people who look at and download porn) UP??

P.s> While we on the matter - where is the Paris Hilton video downloadable from? :p

nope
unless your downloading kiddie porn in which case they should lock you up

dude go to www.edonkey.com or www.softseek.com search edonkey download install
then search paris hilton one night in paris but if you with uunet will take like a month to download it lol

hate using

but I hate using those peer to peer programmes (like kazaa). always scared Im going to get viruses...

Dont you have a direct /index link?

dude do you want pay
do yourself a favour download edonkey stop being scared think about this a asteroid could kill you. proberly the same odds as getting a virus if you stick to .rar .zip mpg jgp just dont download .exe etc stop being a ninny and try something :)

dont you have a anti virus other than norton?

Just a quick food for thought.

I would love to download all these stuff!

Especially TV shows like LOST and CSI and Smallville!!

BUt I can't.

So instead I use my ADSL for surfing and gaming. Problem is, I often Skype while playing... and Skype eats bandwidth. Doing just this gets me to my cap real quick.

So....

3GB is not enough, even when you are a saint!!

nope---no other virus protection...
Did not know that I could get rubbers for my modem?

I want to use the internet for what I want to,doesnt mater what it is or what I do with it .
Do you get told what u can say to your freind on the telephone?

ANY sort of censorship is pure denial of ones freedom of rights to information.

Basicaly as far a I know the internet is free.

What you do with it is youre own discretion.
I have no probs with the D/L of music or whatever ure heart fancies.

My final word is that it should not be governed or limited at all, otherwise we call ourselves comunistic SA.

Which does not gel in my books.

Basicaly as far a I know the internet is free.(meaning no one has a say in what u do with it).
The technology is here why not use it?
