ADSL accounts cut off

I actually wanted to sign up with Mweb. I am so glad they pulled this stunt before I signed up. Totally despicable behavior - typical of SA telecoms.
 
Well I’m still waiting for someone from Mweb to contact me. I've been cut off since 1pm Friday afternoon, and nobody is willing to help me.

I've also tried to contact ICASA about this matter, still waiting for a reply from them.

Furthermore I’ve handed this matter over to my lawyers to take action against Mweb. Seeing that they are in breach of contract and the communication law of South Africa

Who's to say the line was used for anything illegal? You have any idea of how much content is available on local servers? I am able to fully update both my Linux OSs (several of them) and Windows machines at home via local (can amount to gigs upon gigs per month). Local gaming may take up quite a lot too, as the downloading of patches, mods and maps for local games as well as free local games (ftp.games.saix.net, amongst others)... radio streaming is available on local too (AntFarm).... need I say more? Heck, even local torrents has a lot of free stuff available, as does the news servers....

NNTP traffic is highly unlikely to be any of the above. IMO, a legal case against MWeb could open that door. Also, you could download Linux ISO's until you are blue in the face and still not get to 1.3TB.

If he is comfortable with answering the question of what he was using the bandwidth for then there should be no problem proceeding. Especially his 8TB on his 2 servers at home. Also, I seem to remember him saying somewhere that he is a mod on Bitfarm. Could be wrong on that one though.
 
You said he is "likely to be something illegal". Tell us what you think he is doing illegal. What law is he breaking and how is he breaking it?

Come on, stop acting so stupid guys. NNTP traffic is the news servers. Everyone knows what's on there, no way you could download this much legal content and if you could that is highly theoretical and almost definitely not the case.

Why make as if you don't know what he's talking about? I don't get it. :confused:

So he'd be violating a few copyright laws I'm sure. You can argue about whether those are illegal or not if you want, but get to it..

Besides the fact that he said it was NNTP traffic, those are all quite normal (outside of SA :() uses for your traffic. It wouldn't nearly get to this kind of usage.. not close.

Of course you should be allowed to do all of those things, just saying that we all know it's not the case. I don't know why people still bring up all the theoretical "Linux ISO" kind of stuff every time.

I've downloaded over a terabyte of Linux iso's and repositories off of local servers. I also patch most of my games via games.saix.net. I do play on SAIX's servers as well as vpn's that I host with a friend. Believe me, it's more than possible.

where does the law say it is illegal to download off News Servers?

In one month? I doubt there are even that many different Linux ISO's hosted locally, and of course what is the point.. you wouldn't have enough time to install them even if you were doing nothing but downloading all month.

It might be possible but pretty unlikely I'd think. Really, game patches? You could get to about 3-5GB's a month unless you're reinstalling all your games for fun and downloading the patches. Honestly I couldn't believe someone downloading 1TB locally for legal uses, definitely not someone who leaves their PC for more than 10 minutes a day. :P

you and Abe keep throwing the words legal and illegal around. Please tell us which legislation you are referring to. You tell us to stop beating around the bush, but you guys are the ones making these vague references to something that is supposedly illegal.

Like I said in my first post, we'd obviously mean downloading copyrighted content, infringing on those copyrights. Surely you know this already?

I don't know the exact legislature, maybe check safact.co.za or the recent Piratebay court case for some ideas.

I'd say downloading albums, movies, games, pay software etc off the news servers is illegal.

Urg, everyone knows that is legal. It's about what we all know makes up the majority of the content on news servers, and what you are in all likely hood downloading if you hit over 1Tb mostly off them.

Look, surely you MUST know what we're getting at by now?
