Hi guys looking at getting ADSL and need some advice.
Looking at 1mb Telkom and Openweb 5 gig account. What is the differecne between SAIX and IS? Seems SAIX is cheaper.
Also is Openweb any good for gaming and downloading p2p?

Thanks again.
Sick of the slow Iburst speeds.
Need something that is unshaped.

SAIX generally has much lower latency internationally and is better generally. IS gives you 30GB local after your cap though. Openweb SAIX should be fine, IS shapes P2P quite heavily and SAIX'd probably be better for gaming too.

cool thanks -if not openweb then who else could you recommend please based on my needs?
thanks

If you buy a SAIX account its the same account from everywhere. Openweb is good, either them or WebAfrica, think Openweb are a bit cheaper if you want a 5 or 10GB account.

thanks again Syndyre. how long do you think telkom would take to install if I don't have a line yet?

I asked them that a couple of weeks ago and they said 2 weeks for the analogue phone line and then another 2 weeks for the ADSL. Not sure if it happens that quickly in practice but they seem to be better. You can also apply for the line through the ISPs now.

Predicting Telkom install times is like predicting Lotto numbers.
I waited 2 months for the ADSL part, my friends waited 2 days and some people are at 24 months and counting.

If your in one of the bigger cities then it'll probably be fairly fast.

Great, just spoke to the guys at Openweb and was quoted R129 per gig for unshaped. Now I just need to get hold of Telkom but they are closed today. Seems that ADSL is just the right way to go. I am trying to download the unit series and get about 1.2-2.2k. I mean thats just rediculous.

What are you going to be doing that you'll need unshaped? Often its not really needed and shaped is a lot cheaper.

Really want to download series on torrents. I love these damn series. I just cannot handle this speed anynmore of about 1-2k. What do you think ? Thanks once again.

I have a SAIX shaped account and often download torrents at 200-300KB/s on my 4 meg line so you can get decent speeds on a shaped account. There's also stuff like Easynews where you can download over http which effectively makes it unshaped and you could easily max out your line with that. Telkom shaping isn't like iburst's shaping, not nearly as severe.

WHAT??? You get 200-300k?? No bloddy ways thats just wrong. Ok then I will go for the unshaped SAIX account then. Holy crap man.

Usually not on one torrent but on a few running together, and that's on shaped. :)

Going unshaped for torrents does not really make sense IMO. Why not go for shaped at almost half the price and then let it download 24/7? If you switch on encryption, it also helps.

On a single *well-seeded* intl torrent, I can max out my 384 line with shaped. That works out to about an episode(350mb) every two and a half hours. So if you go for a 4 meg line with a shaped a/c it should be even less without costs a fortune like unshaped.

Wow so many people here and no replies, one can only wonder. And people complain about the news section being busy??

Probably because it has been covered 9742824846848^9 times.

SAIX > IS.

And if you get TelkomInternet (SAIX ISP) bandwidth then you get 10GB local for each 1GB you purchase. This 10GB comes in once your initial cap has been reached.

So I would get 4Mbit + 1 x 3GB TI account and 1 x 2GB TI account. You'd get 50GB local after initial caps are reached.
