ADSL and microfilters

Good to hear that it's working. Did you enquire whether or not you are going to have to pay the R490 callout fee? I think you may be in for a bit of a shock when your first bill arrives.
Make sure that you aren't being charged anything extra for a Telkom router if you didn't receive one.

The Telkom 2GB and 3GB ADSL accounts are usually only capped at 4GB and 6GB and are currently some of the cheapest bandwidth packages at the moment. If you choose one of the Do packages then you can probably save even more i.e. Do level 2 which includes 4GB bandwidth costs R258p/m - the normal ADSL line rental fee is ~R150 so you are getting 4GB for an an extra R110 etc.

Wait-wait!? Can you explain this some. Reading before I was under the impression that Telkom killed people on their high usage rates.

I'm doing WebAfrica 10Gig for 490 (or so). Telkom has better price structures that that? 4GB for 110?? can I do multiple accounts .. like maybe 8 of those for 880 and get 32GB? That would be so great. Right now I'm trying to limit my usage so I don't kill my cap, but I'm still doing 1 Gig a day.

Thanks

If you choose something like a Do Broadband Level 2 then you pay R258p/m for 4GB - if you want an additional 6GB from Telkom you need to pay an extra R239 for one of their 3GB packages. If you are unable to use a Do package then the saving will not be as large. Just remember that some of the Do packages come with a Closer option which you proably don't want - it is usually more cost effective to choose a separate Closer Plan like Closer Plan 1 or Closer Plan 2 rather than to bundle it using a Do Closer package. You need to study the details very carefully.

Telkom sells 2GB (4GB) and 3GB (6GB) bandwidth packages for R149 and R239 incl. VAT. Take a look at www.telkomsa.net for the details. This should work out a bit cheaper than a WA package. You can order them online and have them added to your phone bill. It's possible that at certain times you may not receive the unofficial 4GB and 6GB allowances but I have never had a problem. I would first give this a try and then change if you are not happy. You could also look at www.cybersmart.co.za - They offer 3GB packages for R125p/m but only at 384k speeds.

What happened with the callout fee? If the self install option is available in your area and the technician didn't actually have to configure/plug in your router I would try to get the callout/installation fee waived. What did the technician do when he visited?

From the sound of it you will be looking for an uncapped account very shortly. Does your router support L2TP (layer 2 tunnelling protocol)? You could also look at uncapped options from www.xdsl.co.za, www.ods.co.za, www.openweb.co.za etc. Just remember that uncapped in SA is never 'uncapped'.
