ADSL at less than 3c per GB

Afrihost CEO Gian Visser has explained how ADSL data prices have dropped to less than 3c per GB.

Only if you leave out the Telkom line cost.
4 mbit is R299 + phone line R189 so with a 100 Gig package is still R4.88 per gig + the ISP's so called 3c per gig.
Guess who needs to come to the party

I know it's not bad if you need 100GB/month. For anything less Cell C works out cheaper and that highlights a fundamental problem we still have with fixed line in this country. Bogus statistics like this guy gives just hides that fact.

Very disingenuous to make this claim on this one... yes, ONE customer who is klapping 1TB per month on a promo special that is scheduled to end soon is paying about 3c/GB. Gian also referred to it as a social experiment.

What about the other 100's of 1000's DSL users?

Visser explained how one of Afrihost’s clients, who subscribes to a 20GB capped package for R29 per month, is getting data for cheaper than ever before.

This user consumes over 1TB (1,024GB) of data per month, which translates into an effective price of less than 3c per GB.

Seems to be some confusion about what I was claiming here.

This video was made during the course of my interview at the conference and is taken from my answer to a question Rudolph asked me about how companies could make money given the falling ADSL prices.

I used this as an example of how low in one instance the amount of money we receive for a GB has fallen. This particular client only pays us R29 in total. He does not have his line with us and does not pay us anything more. It was used as a single example to highlight some of the challenges all ADSL companies face.

It was never my intention to claim that this is the standard price for all ADSL clients nor did I have any idea there would be an article written specifically about this.

I thought it was an interesting fact about just how low the ADSL prices have fallen over 7 years from the R70 to R80 per GB mark.

Fact is, even at the R1 per GB price point that everyone pays (and they only pay for GBS they use for the 6 hours during peak time), the drop in price has been absolutely incredible.

Just calculated my data usage for the month so far on FTTH.

Works out to 2c / GB

Fair enough. Mybb does have a habit of taking things out of context.

But it does still highlight another issue I've had with adsl providers over the years. You pay for data in Mbps but then sell it in GB. This obfuscates the fact that whether this user uses 20GB or 1TB you still make R29 from them. It's a nonsensical model that cannot work in any industry. We have to move away from thinking in this GB mindset and towards a pure speed mindset.
