What Should I be using ...

A combo 3g router or a wimax one ???

Need 100% uptime

That depends on whether you are able to get wimax.
Personally i would prefer to have wimax as a backup over 3G as it is much more stable in my experience (often more reliable than ADSL).
For wimax you just need a WAN router like a WRT54GL - the rest of the equipment is supplied by the wimax supplier.

Wimax as a backup to DSL is a good idea, however it is dependant on coverage. If you really need 100% uptime you should be looking at commercial solutions rather than trying to do it yourself. Embedded routers (with or without 3rd party firmware) might work fine for the average home user, until something goes wrong.

Maybe I was a bit overzealous with the 100% uptime we just cant affor to be down for more that 30min..
we have had a talkom fault since 1am this morning .. and the server is currenctly plugged into my htc.. :)

we are also only down once ever couple of months ...
so thinking I might get a billio 7300gx

The problem with Telkom Wimax is it still runs over the same network and realm aside from the last mile, so if a problem occurs beyond your last mile it'll probably affect both.

Yea just figured out we need the bridged modem.. seem no of these 3g/adsl combos can run in bridged mode...

The best backup would be a prepaid 3g device. Therefore you dont have to pay monthly fees if you are not going to use it.

Thats why Vodacom/iBurst WiMax would be a much better option as a backup. Check on their site for coverage - they are expanding their network a lot faster than Telkom.
