I want to assign a certain amount of bandwidth per user per month. Is there any opensource or free software to do this. The amount of users is not more than 8 currently.

I know Trend Micro Websecurity suite, ISA with addins etc can do it. But all is very expensive any ideas?

You could always run squid, proxy all the traffic through through it and then a reporter like Squidalyser - works like a charm. Reports per user/per ip etc etc.

Are you prepared to setup a Proxy??

I could suggest some freeware that monitors traffic very well but none that actually limits it without paying. An easy freeware bandwidth limiter would be nice though without the need to have a dedicated PC, is there such a thing???

I understand a proxy is needed to control the flow of bandwidth from every local IP, but surely it would be simple for a program to perhaps overide the workstations settings to alter the gateway\internet or LAN settings when "capped"\limited. If the user were say a power user rather than administrator they wouldn't be able to interfere with the settings.

I do not mind setting up a proxy Sever. I would run it in a Virtual enviroment. My Idea is to allow only my Proxy server access on the Modem and then run all other machines from the proxy. I want not only reporting but rather limit them. If they use all my bandwidth it is already to late I want to prevent 1 user to use evrything and the rest nothing.

Check this thread of mine out...some suggestions were posted there too.

As I mentioned in there Smoothwall requires one to format an IDE partition and install. So download Smoothwall and write it to a CD to boot with. Thats if you want to try that. I can't recommend it as I haven't tried it, but check out the other suggestions I got as well.

Note smoothwall didn't appear to support SATA drives, but its ideal for an older PC I guess seeing as you don't have to throw it out just yet.

Thanks,

I did run Smoothwall very good firewall. The problem is I cannot control the bandwidth. It however have reports in but no control to allow only amount of data per month etc.

I have the same problem, I'm running ClarkConnect, it reports on usage (but only web usage)

Very nice system, just doesn't have "auto capping"

Any solutions yet?
Any luck with Sensornet?
