So the weirdest thing is happening, my phone line is dead as a doornail, but my ADSL is working fine?! (thank ye gods!) :p

Could it be that the thunder and lightning of JHB knocked out only the handset? (I do have a surge protector on the ADSL line) - but then shouldn't the ADSL also be on the blink?

Now to log a fault (sigh)

ja, it has happened to me once as well. Since your ADSL is a digital link, it is quite foreseeable that it could remain active while the analog portion of the line dies.

Except ADSL's digital side relies on the analog medium to send. Thus if analogue is down, ADSL should be down. Check your handset, and try changing the POTS filter. It may have fried, and basically not allowing a link. It could also be that the exchange side is down for analogue routing. So try the handset, POTS filter, and then log line fault.

How so? The telephone line is basically just a cable to the DSLAM. The ADSL doesn't really need the analog portion.

You can remove your microfilters and telephones and just have a dedicated ADSL line... although Telkom will still charge you for the line rental.

try plugging the handset directly to the line - if you can't get dial tone it's most likely the handset cable or handset itself. If you have another handset / cable try these too.

It uses the analog signal as a medium. If an analogue signal can't be sent down the line then a digital one can't. Effectively the digital signal is an analogue signal sent using a special technique, and a larger frequency spectrum. That's why we need POTs filters. They limit the bandwidth on the analogue line to 8KHz. Anything above 8KHz is filtered out so that it does not interfere with the DSL signal. DSL uses 8KHz, upwards. Multiplexing is the technique used.

Basically, it is not a line problem. The problem may lie at the DSLAM, in that the analogue routing mechanism may be down, which is probable, but I would check the filters and handset first.

Happened to me yesterday, came back late night. If u phone telkom the wil just tell u to restart your pc

I tried the handset in 3 other points in my house, with and without the pots filter...still dead

I'm awaiting Telkom's reply, after they logged a fault

As long as the net keeps going I'm happy :-)

Has happened on several occasions in this stormy season. Voice completely dead, but ADSL working with with very low SNR Margin, and synching at a much lower speed than normal.

I'm sure we have covered this a number of times before, but once again won't hurt anyone. ;)

Analog phone service aka voice services requires a pair ie 2 copper wires, whereas ADSL does not it only requires 1 copper wire to successfully work. Hence in this case ADSL is working because 1 of the copper wires is still attached to the DSLAM, voice on the other hand isn't working because 1 of the wires is broken or shorted out.

You will need to report it to the Telkom so they can send a techie to find the problem and fix.

Happened to our office line once and above is the explanation I got from one of the techies:).
