Solar system presumably struck by lightning

Since we are all techies, I'd like to add that "struck by lightning" is probably technically incorrect, if it were a direct strike then there would be serious visible damage, and not much left of it. It is probably an induced surge caused by the direct lightning strike at the neighbor.

My installer just replaced the two arrestors / breakers on the solar strings with an arrestor/fuse combo. Assume this is a better option.
fuses are good .a good arrestor with good fuses rated appropriately will help with a strike .make sure your earthing is impecable even if you have to knock a 3 meter long earthspike in and pee on it everynight to keep the ground wet ,that is your first line of defence .keep the panels earthed .remember you can add more surge protectors especially in the db board schneider make very good modular units for the db .easy to swop out if shunted and no loss of power if blown .just unplug and plug a new cartridge in .

i dont think your insurance will have a problem you have no physical home damage so the install wont come into question .the evidence of a strike next door is visible .damage is electrical.i think it will be a no quibble claim .try not to go the repair route do a quote for a full replacement other damage wont be visible and gremlins may climb in later .insurance is there to put you back in the same place you were before the incident .if youre with the yellow umbrella company ,i dont see any hassles ahead .

Make sure you have power surge cover and the sun insured and the excess. Not all insurers offer it and with most these days it's only added on as an additional at a cost.

If you don't have enough or any power surge cover then talk to your broker.

Not all installers install a separate surge protector on the Eskom side. I did so with a separate electrician. Not that it seems to help much. Got a surge two days back that burnt the power board out on one of my fridges.

Thanks, everyone. I called the installer and he spoke about a fuse that could have popped so let's hope it's only that.

Yes, I'm luckily.

Good luck with that.

Yes I did, thanks.

The neighbour's chimney was struck by lightning.

I bet everything with electronics in that house is either burnt or blown up

yip i got a static flash strike last year it blew 3 ups units .every led driver .gate motor charger .invertor .borehole pump .pool pump .all the lights .electric fence thumper .even all the hdmi amps and circuits blew .the only thing that saved the rest was the invertor that took the shunt .my earthing is spotton and it bent the lightning arrestor on the roof .that its now all wavy.it blew the aluminium earth cables off 3 earth rods my carport earth and earth rod basically vanished .

Pretty much yes.
When I lived in JHB every summer was a huge risk... the phone line was blown off the wall, as in the entire wire burnt all along its length, in 2013, and 2015.. In 2015 it blew up the ADSL router even though it was unplugged.. The direct hit on the garage roof in 2013 destroyed everything in my house it even blew the electronics in the PIRs in the rooms for the alarm system

it was scary .i was in the shower at the time .but what was even more scary was the electrician they sent out to evaluate .i thought i was clued up ,this MIE was tops and knew exactly what he was looking for .no bullshitting him .

Motherfsck, sorry to hear. That's a biggie. I should enquire with my insurer about my cover for surges etc. I have the inverter in place so kinda putting all my faith in it. We have these wild highveld storms in the afternoons.

That strike was directed straight at you and you only. Who you piss off?

So with all you knowledgeable guys here. What would be the best approach to get protection in place?
I have panels, an inverter + batteries, and everything that goes with it to complete the installation.

Then I have an over-under voltage protector on my main feed-in. Would it be best to put proper protection on the main incoming feed from eskom or would one also need something for the panels feeding into the house?

the heineman surge arrestors in my db board were on the kitchen floor in pieces .first line of defence good Surgetek surge arrestors in the db or Schneider .dont even look at the retail units .earth everything and earth it again .the 3 ups units saved my computers and tvs as well as hifi and wifi modems all LTE .dstv blew the hdmi output .3 fridges and a big deepfreeze no issues ,intercom fried .but Santam came to the party .i had a 8 kg chlorine bucket hanging from the roof under a gutter it vanished except for the handle .i think thats what it struck .

I hope you have enough Powersurge cover on your building to allow for the repairs to be covered by your insurer.
It falls under the lightning section and not power surge
Are you looking for the AC side only, or your AC and DC (PV)?
Yes, the DC (PV) has its own surge protectors installed.
@soulie might be able to give you better advice, but here is mine:
Did he give you a CoC? I would lodge an insurance claim, they may send an assessor out who would pick up that there was no SPD on the AC side, they will either repudiate the claim with reasons (get it in writing), or they will pay (and you pay excess). Present the excess bill / repudiated claim to your electrician. If he does not want to pay, tell him that you will lodge a complaint with the dept of labour and pull his registration number. Or if he is a ECASA member then you can report him there.
Thanks, will definitely look into it.

The assessor had been here earlier today. He agrees it was a surge caused by the direct lightning strike at the neighbour that caused the damage. He said he would recommend replacement and not repair. He is also happy with the installation and has no problem. He also mentioned that a surge protector is only mandatory for power surges and not lightning.

They just send me a replacement quote for Sunsynk and I'm not happy. I will settle in cash for the quote I sent in to replace the inverter with a Sunsynk again.

Thanks for everyone's input and opinions.

True, but lightning can cause a surge condition by inducing current into the mains feed. You are very fortunate that your assessor gave you a favourable report, and considered the root cause to be lightning.

Whole house went down today. Lightning zapped the earth leakage. No damage on anything.

Them wanting to settle on the price of another brand inverter is not on. Sunsynk is widely available. If their suppliers can't supply Sunsynk, that's not your problem. I would insist on a cash in lieu settlement on a like for like basis. Speak to the assessor, no reason that you should be "out of pocket" for nearly R 7k.

Just an update, the insurance is happy with the assessor's report. Received the AOL for the full amount minus the excess for the quotes I provided.
The new Sunsynk inverter will be installed on Monday with Surge Arrestors.
Dankie @RonSwanson for your advice. The electrician will pay the excess and won't charge me labour for the replacement.
