Hey guys

I need some advice please.
I recently moved into a new place in Sandton and I need to get connected to the internet again.
Previously I had a Telkom ADSL line with the Do Broadband package 1. Sadly I only had 1GB bandwidth allocated to me.

In my area, I have excellent Neotel coverage. I am considering the NeoFlex 5GB for R499.

Is this package worth or should I stick to Telkom?
Bare in mind i would probably have to sign a 24 month contract with Neotel which I am not thrilled about.

Any suggestions?

Regards
L

Stay far far far away from Neotel, at least until they get their act together, and bring us real broadband. Their internet service is somewhere between extremely #@$% and non-existant, and their customer service is terrible. Their billing is also sucky at times.

Do yourself a huge favour and get ADSL.

If you dont yet have a Telkom phone line, Phone 10219 and apply for one. Get the Telkom Closer Plan 1 or 2, it comes with free installation (usually costs +-R700). Once your line is installed, you can cancel the Closer Plan 1 or 2 package, and just pay regular line rental of R131. Then apply for ADSL. If they offer you a free modem, refuse, as this will tie you down to a 24 month contract. Make sure don't agree to any contracts, whatsoever. Ask specifically to go on a month to month subscription, and ask for the ADSL self-install as well (will save you time and +-R700).

Then the best part of all - start shopping for an ISP. There's lots of competition in the ADSL market. Afrihost offers the cheapest reliable capped bandwidth, at R29 per GB, but you might want to sign up before end of December, when the special is set to end (but rumours go that it is here to stay). Or get uncapped, from SAOL or Cybersmart (requires you migrate your ADSL line part to them, which is why it is important not to sign a contract with Telkom - they will refuse to migrate your ADSL line). Or wait for DigiChilli and Screamer to sort their networks out, and get uncapped from them. There's lots happening. Even iBurst dropped their ADSL prices recently, and everyone is waiting to see what WebAfrica is going to do on 1 March 2010, when they launch their new packages on their brand new Tier 1 network.

If you can't get ADSL, then I'd recommend MTN/Vodacom 3G/HSDPA. Much better than Noetel, and at least if you buy the modem up front, you know you can still use it on at least 4 mobile networks (Telkom 3G and Cell C included). The device is not useless like Neotels proprietary crap. Even iBurst is better than Neotel. For your own sanity, stay away from Neotel!

Many thanks for this. I won't sign up with Neotel. :)
