Hi all

I recently contacted telkom to come and install an adsl line. When they arrived they said that i needed to install a conduit. My questions are:

1) Are there any special requiremants for the conduit or is PVC ok?
2) Where should the conduit start and end? Should the conduit run all the way from the telkom box on the road all the way into the house?
3) how do i go about installing it? i.e. how deep must i dig the trench and so on?

Thank you

Start digging if you see kangaroos you dug to far.

I have nver heard of this requirement from telkom. Basically at my house the cable just comes in from the overhead lines into my house just nailed against the roof beams

In some complexes, for example, they are not allowed to install overhead cables and are denied access to dig up the road or paving to install underground conduit tot he customer. Hence they tell the customer to provide it himself!

Ah, I stand corrected :o

Major hassles...

So go to the pole and see what the other houses did around you.
If you are going to use pvc piping, use pvc weld and where is goes underneath the flower garden, put some hard stuff on top for your garden engineer will not kill your adsl.
you better find out where telkom stops to find out how long your piping must be.
a cheaper solution will be to use 20mm black water pipe. at the end bend it 180 degrees for waterproofing.

1) 20/25mm PVC Conduit is more than fine
2) From the Telkom Box / Manhole to the -inside- of your house
3) As it is a private installation, no requirements. Keep in mind, the manholes are generally arround 1m to 800mm deep.

PS - Check, before you dig. If you are in a complex, chances are the builders (if it's relatively new) installed pipes already and you (and Telkom) just don't know about it. Check for PVC Inspection holes in the walls (outside), open them, look what's inside.

Check what Savage says. Manhole is important. You will need a small manhole/water trap where Telkom will connect physically to cable from ur house to their cable in black sleeve. Otherwise your ADSL line will go down every time is rains and the soil becomes waterlogged. The scotch-lock joints they use degrade over time if they get wet. Had that problem for about 2 years and then built a small manhole (300x300mm using a few bricks) with a small concrete cover bought at Builders. It can be about 500-800mm deep.

Since then, rock solid at 4mb come rain or shine. My thomson ST585 router with DMT says I can get 8mb on ADSL1 and 16mb on ADSL2+

Telkom has weather proove enclosures inside manholes where they do the connections these days.... The street boxes are also weather proove. It really just becomes a problem when the cables are pole mounted, where it is not water proove.
