matt ... don't go around in circles, we have answered all your questions to the best of our ability ... we have told you what we think is the right thing, you keep on asking the same questions ...

I personally think that:

you can go get your modem,

you don't need a technician do install your modem (that is like I said before, if you know a bit about hardware and software installation)

and the speed of SAIX, that includes Telkom, is identical to any other service provider.

About CyberSmart's WebSite looking a bit unprofessional (in other words thats what I gathered of your comment).. I agree .. but their service is the same as any other ISP.

Good luck if you decide to go for it.

Avoid Telskum please ........... :p

THANKS man! sorry bout the circles....
i dont understand how i can install and split phone lines etc.
How would i know how to do that? Drivers etc is simple... but actually hacking away at the phone line is a bit scary :(
will you guys walk it through step by step on the day.lol.

Oh just another tip - place your order as soon as possible, as the waiting time can be a couple of months.

don't worry about that too much, once you get the splitter it should be pretty self explanatory how to install it.

i dont understand how i can split my own lines. you guys are all for the go but i wanna make 110 % certain and know what to do...

Its a box that plugs into your phone jack with two jacks on the otherside. one labeled phone the other modem.

so would i get this with the modem. is it bundled or sumthing?
Im guessing youll only find them at Telkom, so definetly sold seperately. But they re only around 30 bucks if i remeber correctly, which i probably dont.

this is why i hate dsl. i am confused about all the startups.

If sum1 here has recently got dsl plz can you share the whole process with me. All the little and extra things to buy... i dont have money like dust.lol.

Hi matt ... if you go for Telkom's modem (the ADSL USB Pots) its complete, and it has a leaflet with instructions ... its easy ... but if you get stuck with the installation, you just dial 0800 375375 and choose modem setup option if I am not mistaken and someone will guide you, but the leaflet's instructions are good enough for you do do it yourself.. it is a simple installation .. no messing around with wires, ... the filters are labeled.

If you buy another make besides Telkom ask in the store if it comes with installation instruction leaflets and filters.

matt you can do it ... :) :) I know you are concerned to assume the responsibility and then fail, but it is simple after all the techies at Telskum can do it, if they can? so can anyone .. hahaha

Read the newbie faq if you havent already. Then when youve bought youre equipment read the manual s. If youre still stuck post specific questions on the Hardware board.

Thanks - is the telkom modem like R1000 ?

but i still dont understand even after reading faq last week.
what actually happens? does my line get split into 2 so one for internet and 1 for calling? Im fing scared to do it... my parents are like ' if you can sort it out, you can go 4 it '. BUT i dont feel confident at all to do it.

Yes the telkom modem is way to expensive. Shop around. If youre only running one PC get a USB version it'll be cheaper and easier to set up. When i first got mine someone from my ISP helped me set it up over the phone. Failing that im sure someone on here would be able to help you with whatever make and model you buy.

Youre spot on about the splitter so one less thing to worry about.

Look first off youve got to get Telkom to hook you up, so why not research the cheapest modem so long and once youre connected go and buy it. Then to start with as much as i hate to say it Telkominternet is probably your safest route to start. BUT DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT.
Honestly man you will get it going so dont stress.

matt I have the leaflet in front of my monitor ... can you see it? hahaha .. joking

Quick installation guide:

socket on wall from Telkom (you already have one) with 2 plugs in it

one connects to the microfilter and from there to the phone

the other connects to the ELPU (AC power plug) from there to the modem and the modem connects to the USB ... simple I promise ...

The USB Pots use to cost R799 .. don't know now how much it is ... but like I said, its complete ... but you don't have to buy Telkom's product. :)

Thanks alot Nick

*but (yeah theres always a but, sorry)
a few questions

1. I would go and buy a modem right? What should be included with it?
2. What do i have to get to split the line? Im stil scared of physically tampering with the line :(
3.Should i go with Telkom(250pm) or Cybersmart(100pm)
4. What do Telkom actually have to do? Do they just enable dsl over the telephone once i have split?

SORRY SORRY SORRY for so many questions but like i said i need to be sure.
and this forum kicks ass wit help ;)

The telkom modem is still R800!!!!!! thats way to much - my dad would never chee dat!

Well here is an idea

Ask your dad for R400 for the modem then charge him R400 for the installation .. see? .. you have the money for the modem ....

I can only speak for Telkom's product because thats what I got ... it comes complete ....

You don't have to split the line ... no line splitting allowed ...

You have to use your own discretion on the ISP don't listen to me or anyone else, call them, ask questions but if you can save R150 a month why support the beast?

You have to fill in an application for ADSL, state there that you will do the installation and that you have the modem, all Telkom does is change the port at the exchange.

REMEMBER NO LINE SPLITTING ...:D

1. If your not going with contract and want a different modem then yep...Buy your own. Modem should include of course Modem...mini manual and depending on modem...a Filter (If not you can get one from Telkom Shop) Of course power cables...Phone line etc should be included. Ie Phone Cable :p
2. The Techie or you should not need to do anything on the Line at Home. The Filter/Splitter You plug into your Phone Line *Basically a mini extension* This goes into your Phone. Your DSL does not go into filter....DSL goes straight into your Phone line. If you only have one line in an office for Phone..I am sure Techie will add a splitter...Basically So you can have DSL/Phone on same socket (if that make sense) So Line ---- > Filter----Phone. and Line ----> Modem
3. Thats totally up to you.
4. They have to enable Dsl at your Exchange before you can can actually use your DSL. Once they have enabled it..You will be called with an Install date when Techie comes out (Providing you not chosen the Install yourself option) To bring your Modem...Plug it in....and off he goes (Simple as that). Once you know your Line is DSL is enabled. You log into your Router/Modem via Explorer for example (How you talk to the Modem) Punch in your Username/password(given to you by your ISP of choice)....Save and Reboot....And if all well your DSL is up and running connected to your ISP

OK - Brilliant

**** Finally,this is my PLAN****
1. Phone Telkom and tell them id like adsl.
2. Buy a modem when i KNOW that they are coming and after they have made sure i can receive dsl from exchange. (Im sure i will, cauz my friend lives 600 metres from me and his dsl running good , im In Northcliff) With this modem - all the stuff should come with right? all the splitter mods and thingmabobs.
3.I call Cybersmart and tell them i want 192 3 GIG account.
4.Then Telkom will phone in 3 weeks or MORE and will enable the dsl? Or do i first install modem software, splitters etc. And then they enable exchange?
5.I get info from Cybersmart and username / password accounts

Jesu$ - Im getting confused again...........lol :(
