OK - Brilliant

**** Finally,this is my PLAN****
1. Phone Telkom and tell them id like adsl.
2. Buy a modem when i KNOW that they are coming and after they have made sure i can receive dsl from exchange. (Im sure i will, cauz my friend lives 600 metres from me and his dsl running good , im In Northcliff) With this modem - all the stuff should come with right? all the splitter mods and thingmabobs.
3.I call Cybersmart and tell them i want 192 3 GIG account.
4.Then Telkom will phone in 3 weeks or MORE and will enable the dsl? Or do i first install modem software, splitters etc. And then they enable exchange?
5.I get info from Cybersmart and username / password accounts

Jesu$ - Im getting confused again...........lol :(

Yes . first call Telkom ...

fill in the necessary application and get a reference number, then call them everyday to find the progress of it :) ...

when you know that your line is about to be converted to ADSL go buy the modem ...

call the ISP of your choice, buy then maybe prices will even be better (we're all hoping)

The ISP will give you the username and password ... please remember ... DON'T SIGN A CONTRACT WITH NO ONE .. things will change soon and if you're tied up in a contract you will not benefit from any good that may happen ... miracles do happen ...

Hey matt welcome to myadsl.

I had to do all this myself a while back! It really is easy! Here is what I suggest you do:

1.Phone telkom and make sure you can get adsl were you live unfortunately not all regions support adsl!Check out the telkom website they have a page were you put in your phone number and it checks if adsl is supported, not a sure fire way but it helps.

2.Order ADSL as quick as possible, I think you should have all ready! it is suppose to take 21 days for your adsl to be up and running but it usually takes longer!Keep phoning them after you have ordered and find out how far your request is get names and numbers make it personal, it has a "weird" way of speeding up your request!

3.buy modem when you have adsl setup, i know you are excited about getting adsl but if you buy a modem now and something happens like you can't get adsl you will be stuck with a modem!

4.ISP, I would recommend OpenISP i have been using MR beep's service for about 3 months it very affordable and has great support. But like mentioned in the end it is up to you do your own research, find out who will work best for you! If you go with cybersmart, it's fine to i mean no one can beat R100 pm!. If you do, share your experience, I am also curious of their offer. :)

5.Don't sign a telkom contract or any one for that matter use month to month!!!

6.You will soon see that 3gig isn't that much, we all do! lol

And oh, the splitter is not something that physically cuts your phone line!!lol The beauty of adsl is it makes your phone line a multitasking line! You can be on the web and receive and make phone calls at same time! The method is simple You have a normal phone line, your phone/modem is currently plugged into that, right? So with adsl you take out the phone/modem plug in a splitter plug your adsl modem/router into the labeled socket on splitter and your phone line with filter into the other socket on the splitter.

------Line--->[ splitter ]------MODEM----------PC
| splitter |-------Micro Filter------Phone

This is how my setup is at home.
Hope it helps.

Excellent Stuff guys!!! i am gonna print this and explain to my mom!

HellTell - i told my mom that EVERY1 says no contracts.lol.thanks for your brilliant work!

Ass Sazin - Excellent guide my friend! OpenISP - how much is that for a 3 gig? Nothing beats Cybersmart and the cheaper the better right? Especially for sum1 that doesnt have a job to get big caps.lol.

Why must i phone regularly - i dont wanna be impatient and then they tell me that exchange isnt here!!! 3 WEEKS is not alot. My 56k can still burn some.lol.

Lots of people here have waited a long time for there installations to happen - but I was quite lucky - I got it installed within 7 days of placing the order, without even chasing them up. So expect the worst, but it's not always that bad.

After my relatively painless installation my friend also ordered ADSL, then rushed out and bought a modem - only to be told by Telkom a week later that there were no ports on his exchange -- so do wait for the go ahead from Telkom before you go out and buy the modem and bits.

Hehe no problem,
Any way OpenISP 3gig R199.

Well by phoning regularly let's say once or twice a week it may just proof the difference between getting it in 4/5weeks and getting it in 3weeks. :)

I can still remeber the days of good old dailup! and R7 call , only really surfing on weekends waiting so long between downloads constant disconnections! lol
ADSL changes your live and you will soon see that 3gigs can get a bit small! ;)

cmcbugg! thanks man - 7 days? quick man. geez

Sazin - u are scaring me man. 3 gigs not enough? well it better than dialup i guess? ***** - look at my connection properties. Ive been connected for
1 day and 10 hours without disconnection. Telkom dialup is awesome i wont lie!

One more thing - when i buy USB adsl modem - do i get the things and parts to install myself? Where do i buy those?

Hehe well i mean it may well be enough for you but when you get adsl it unlocks a new world unknown by many dail up users, It's just to be able to use adsl with freedom, not to worry about your cap!

The modem thing, not sure what you mean by "- do i get the things and parts to install myself?" You will get, in the most basic of setup's the modem a manual a cd with software and maybe a phone extension cable like those you get with normal modem, and yeah that will be just what you need, some may even include the filters, if not don't worry thay are like R30 at telkom shops, you can also find the spillters at telkom shops or at any other shop that sells phone stuff, i got mine at clicks I think.

and if you dont keep phoning, 3 weeks can turn into 3 months. you're a consumer, you're paying for your service so don't just sit back and take the crap they give you. keep hassling them for prompt service delivery, it's your right as a consumer. think of it this way, if you don't pay your telkom account on time what do they do? they cut you off immediately. goes to show they can be prompt when they need to, so you should follow suit and be demanding as well

Connecting multiple pcs

USB modems works fine, so if you're not planning to connect more than one PC just go for the cheapest ADSL modem you can find - it's normally the USB one. Your phone bill will be R270 (monthly rental 4 ADSL192) + R250 (3GB shaped) + 81 (normal line rent) = R600 and then calls on top of that.

The R250 (3GB shaped) - you can off course get this cheaper from other ISPs, e.g. Web Africa of Openweb, etc.
Get the cheapest ADSL available, then download free proxy server software and you can connect many computers through the same modem - I have two machines connecting thru my ADSL modem (simultaneously when required) using a little piece of software that I got at www.analogx.com for nix!

Otherwise Telkom ADSL is rubbish - except for the fact it's all we have at present. Mostly it works okay, sometimes it's crap, always it's too expensive!

Go for it!

Id suggest going into a front office. That way you can get a face to put a name to and make sure that everything is written down.

And get a copy of the order form make sure it says self-installation.
I set up everything myself. All the Telkom dude was come to my house to check the line and i got charged the full installation fee.
