ADSL Connection dropping
i also asked telkom to come check my line and replace if necessary..

and they say they'd charge min R100 for visiting and line replacement cost..

is it true?

As far as I understand the R100 is only if it is a fault with your equipment - the onus seems to be on you to prove it - I think it is a case of BS baffling with BS - so prove to the tech that it is not your equipment and do not get charged the 100 bucs.

Get the tech to put his router in and make sure he leaves it there for at least an hour or 2 if he decides to leave.

My mail addy is in my profile, I am in JHB - drop me a line if I can be of assistance

Only if they don't find a fault. They can't charge you if something is wrong with your line or the DSLAM port.

Same Problem!

I am currently using the Planet ADSL router and have been having sync loss problems since day one (installed in October 2002) The telkom techies who BTW are a great bunch of guys who are trying to do there best with little or no training (I even had to show one of them how to log into his XP Pro laptop, and another one told me that on a adsl link its faster to have a 2mbps connection to the exchange than a 10mbps one, he even said it was the fact that i was connecting at 10 that was slowing me down ???)) The techies came out many many times with lots of fancy gadgets and promised to get to the bottom of the problem. After 3 weeks of trying and having as many as 4 techies here at a time I gave up trying to solve my problem, guess ill also have to wait for another operator to come. I also tried the Alcatel and Marconi routers with the same results My line works fine for hours then I lose sync for 10 to 20 seconds and I'm back up for anything from a few mins to a few hours when it drops again. (this is not a big pain for surfing and downloads but it SUX for gaming)

I seem to have a lot of CRC errors on my adsl line (they replaced most of the cable between me and the exchange as well as the dslam port but it stays the same.

I Hope to one day have a stable reliable broadband solution.

I'm using the Mecer USB modem that I bought for 500 bucks - though it was my cheap modem that caused this. But after reading these messages on the forum, it could be the line.

BTW, the Mecer uses the Alcatel Dynamite chipset. I am trying to locate the latest driver/dsl layer driver for this but was so far unsuccesful.

Hi Fanusj,
I use this modem as well and last week I had numerous disconnects - 5 per day.
The last 3 days, I must say I have not had one. I must assume that my line
and modem are fine. btw, I did not install anything off the Telkom CD they provided.

Hi guys

Just to update whats happened since my last post. Well, it turns out it was my router. I've changed from a netgear DM602 to a netgear DG814. I must say, what a difference. A crap load more features, firewall, e-mail notifications, its great - I recommend it.

Since I've plugged it in - no problems - score!!!

Another nice feature is that if the line drops, the modem displays it - the 602 didn't which was a pain in the butt. Anwyay, try this router if u still got problems

quazzi please keep us posted if that router craps out - I'm seriously thinking of getting yet another adsl router (this is my second one), because the signal just gets dropped over and over again. cap? what cap? I won't even notice the cap when I hit it - the service is already so bad.

1200 rand
1500 rand
and now I'm thinking that the 3000 rand one will solve my problems...
:(:(:(:(:(

I'm not sure if I am relieved or infuriated to find so many ADSL users with the same prob as me! And this, after spending some weeks thinking it was something I had done!

Having read thru this entire thread the bulk of the reports indicate a Telkom/exchange/port/line fault-level problem, and not a modem problem. In fact the sheer number of different modems displaying this same problem seems to rule out the possibility of it being the modem, except that some may be more fault tolerant than others resulting in the false perception of improved service.

This still means that there is an unacceptable level of noise on the Telkom lines, even for Telkom's own Marconi-type standard issue modems (which is what I am using)!

What will happen if I link 2 of the cream-coloured Telkom issue filter boxes in serial? Will it degrade the line further or clean up the signal? Watch this thread...

What recourse do I have if I never signed off on the original installation?

KnKyJ, heres some advice, get Telkom to test your line attenuation, both with your router plugged in and without. If your attenuation jumps over 60 (with your router plugged in), your line will be unstable and your router will have sync problems. If you've got faxes and other phones connected to your ADSL line, unplug them and check your attenuation - have the guys on the phone - they owe it to you to run a few tests and it will only take a few minutes.

My recommendation is

1.) Unplug all your phones except the one you're going to phone telkom with
2.) Phone Tech Support (0800 375 375) and ask them to check the line attenuation - I'm not too sure who u'll need to speak to because I did this with the Telkom techie who phoned cape town (apparantly toll free)
3.) with them on the phone, plug in your router and then each phone one by one, each time asking them to test your attenuation. Once you hit over 60, u'll know which device is causing the problem.

Its a tedious solution, but at least you'll find out what the problem is. Also, it will save you having to buy another router if it's your fax or phone causing the problem. In my case, I plugged in all the phones and no change in attenuation. As soon as I plugged in my router (DM602) it jumped from 58 to 63.

When I got the new router, I phoned in and did the procedure all over again, my attenuation stayed solid at 58, since then no problems.

I hope this helps.

UPDATE!!!!!

K since my previous post i unplugged my Alcatel adsl line filter and split my adsl line at the wall with a normal 2 to one telephone splitter and connected my adsl modem to one port and the filter(for normal tel) on the other and viola no more disconnections.
Where previously my router would show 8 or 9 startup attempts in a day I now have only 1.

YAY
lets hope it lasts.

PS. I was one of those lucky few to get adsl at the start and HAD (until this month) 4 user names (12Gig) but thanks to the mates at telkom it is no more.
Hi Guys,

I have a prob where my adsl conn drops. SOmetimes after 5 minutes, sometimes after 5 hours. I have tried both a netgear dm602 and billion bipac. The billion one drops connectionn every 2 minutes. I have tried them both at a site in bryanston and they work perfectly.

The telkom dude said im quite far from the exchange and maybe its that. He also said there is something he oculd do tho fix it, but he would loose his job if we did. Any ideas?

This is VERY irritating.

Sounds like we are having the same problem. I also have a netgear DM602. Works fine but drops every 5 minutes or so, but sometimes stays connected for longer periods. I am also far from the exchange and had telkom checking every piece of the line.

I got hold of the telkom branded "Telkom Router Pots" modem and tried that for a couple of days. NO PROBLEM!!! This thing stays connected non-stop. But the minute I reconnect my DM602, the problem is back... I am now looking for someone who bought one of these Telkom modems that would like to swap with my netgear.

Hope this helps...

Noooooooooooooo!!!! Trust me, don't make the mistake, try the Netgear DG814 - I had the same problem, since I got this router no problem - connected 24/7 well..... if it wasn't for the IP change - have a look at my previous posts - don't touch the POTS router with a stick

Telkom supply Marconi ADSL routers.

The update you are looking for is available from a link on this page:

http://www.m-newera.co.za/product5-d.htm

I updated this morning so I'm interested to see if it solves the problem, I also seemed to lose my connection every 24 hours or so. The router didn't initialize properly after releasing it's IP.

Well, you can download it there. This is the official update for the Telkom Pots Routers, so I'd suggest using this one instead of something for a router that just looks the same.

I have now been experiencing the exact same problems that you guys have experienced since last week Friday (September 26th) with my Netgear DG824M, it very occasionally seems to have synching problems (ADSL status indicator alternates between green and orange), and also frequently disconnects (green status indicator goes dark, then flashes orange while establishing connection), I too have logged numerous calls with Telkom, and yesterday (October 2nd) had a technician come out and check the setup, at first his equipment registered numerous continuous errors, at which point he disconnected and reconnected and they stopped. After approx. 30 minutes nothing further had occured and he came to the conclusion that it was perhaps a DSLAM problem where the connection had not properly closed and it was causing problems and proceeded to leave (2PM). Everything would have been great if the problems had not started occuring again at 10 that evening - There is nothing that really seems to trigger it, making it difficult for a technician to identify what the problem actually is.

What is even more infuriating is that ADSL and the Netgear had all been working great since I had gotten it, with my uptime only being halted by the 24h reset, and my speeds being generally good (while uncapped that is), and that was 2 months ago. It's only in this past week that things have stopped working, and I wouldn't be surprised if Telkom has done work on the lines which have caused the Netgear to have more problems.

this is really a serious and frustrating problem experienced by more and more people.
this problem must be addressed by telkom!

Well, the Technician, god bless him, left his ADSL modem here for me to use for the evening, as well as installed the monitoring software for me to monitor my ADSL connection with (the amount of stuff you can monitor via these ADSL USB Pots modems is ridiculous), this was because during the hour he was here, the ADSL connection was way within tolerant levels (actually, better than most). Needless to say, the second he left my driveway, the line dropped three times :P and then a further 5 times over the following 2 hours.

Header errors: 567 (seems to reset upon a disconnect tho)
Unroutable cells: 99 (doesn't reset upon dc)
Frame errors: 39 (again, doesn't reset)
Line Attenuation: 36dB (well within tolerant levels)

It looks like it is a connection error, and not my Netgear which is causing the problems [xx(]

Well, the technician has come and gone today, and frankly, we're both baffled, he arrived to find the ADSL disconnecting as has been happening for the past week - even with the Marconi, and his testing equipment registered an amazing amount of connection problems when he tried using it, so he proceeded to test all the copper wiring in the house and came to one conclusion - we have very good copper. So the copper isn't the problem, he couldn't replicate the errors he and I had been getting earlier (though he did understand that it worked one second and would go down the next, and it could take hours between "downtime sessions"), so he will now be taking it up with their "specialists", so here's hoping they can figure out what's wrong.

That said, I haven't disconnected since this morning, so maybe the technician did something after all (he did open up the one wall jack and remove... something which he said could cause problems).

I'll keep you guys posted.
