I am having an Internet problem that I hope I can get some help here.
However the problem is erratic and is very frustrating.
I am on TELKOM ADSL and have an old ADSL WI FI modem that was part of the original contract. The modem has a fault in that the on off switch won’t engage and I have taped it down as to be always on.
What happens that after switching on the modem it usually takes a few minutes to sync in and connect? (I always switch off the modem and unplug from the wall when not in use). Then I try opening a browser but 90% of the time the home page will not load (using IE 8). I usually get the following message on the webpage; “DIAGNOSE CONNECTION PROBLEM”.
To get round this what I have done is go to “my network places”, bring up Local Area connection, disable it the enable it, then reopen the browser. I then am able to load the home page but am limited to about 2 or 3 loads. So each time I want to load a page I have to disable and enable. This allows me access to the page. On IE 8 when the page won’t load I get the “DIAGNOSE CONNECTION PROBLEM”, message. I also get the same message if I try 10.0.0.2. When I have managed to get on to 10.0.0.2, after much disable/enable, the user is correct and all the settings.
After the first call to ADSL help line on Saturday night I was informed that there were exchange problems in my area and that it would work once it was fixed. As I never believed this I called again last night and got a more informed consultant. We went through a series of tests and to cut a long story short he decided that I had a virus in IE 8 and suggested I use Firefox. I did a few “ping” tests with him and I could not get any results from any local sites but I could ping to 10.0.0.2.
Anyway somehow or other I managed to download Firefox ( lots of disabling and enabling) but after installing it I could only access 1 or 2 pages and then it would come up with a timed out message or just freeze.
So please can I get some answers? Is it the Modem or what? How come I could successfully download Firefox without the download (8MG) timing out if the modem is faulty? What new one should I get, I guess I do need one as the on/ off button is broken and it’s out of Guarantee. I do not play games but use full 5gig allocation each month.

I am writing this from work, its my home ADSL thats the problem
Thanx in anticipation

Sup chutzpah, take your modem to a telkom direct shop to have it exchanged. Then it is not necessary to unplug and switch off your modem when not in use, they have been built to be always on. If you changed your password on the modem and you have enabled your firewall you can rest assured that you won't get hacked.

The problem you are explaining seems to be related to a cabling issue, or the faulty modem. I would start at the modem because it is not working properly and should be your first point of call trying to find the route cause.

Hope this helps?

Thanx but my modem is out of the exchange period its about 3 years old. I always unplug because I have lost modem from lightening strikes many times. If its a cabling issue why does the Laptop thats remotely connected have the same problem?

The router is broken, what more do you want to know? :)

So a car where the engine dies after 100m's everytime must be working perfectly amirite? /sarcasm

It's randomly losing connection and you don't have the techical savvy to see whether it's a line synching issue or PPPoE issue or line noise or any other amount of factors

Am I being a bit sensitive here or am I being ridiculed because I lack "technical savvy"? Remember there are lots of forum users who have limited knowledge and all they ask is those with more knowledge give "friendly help". Is that too much too ask?

Option a ;)

As mentioned earlier the prime candidate in a situation like this - especially with older and known to be ****ty hardware - is the router itself. Were you to pay someone to look into it they'd firstly test that with a replacement,if that doesn't solve it then a more indepth analysis of your setup would be done, which is a bit difficult over a forum :)

the internet light on my router turns red from time to time (though not too often) and i lose my internet connection. all the other lights remain green. should i be concerned? should i buy a new router?

Have a look at the router log to see what it says.

Try a new driver for the Ethernet LAN card you have.

chutzpah44, try this. Open Dos by going to the Run command and typing "command" and press enter. Then type ipconfig /flushdns. Make sure your Local Area connection is set to "Obtain DNS server address automatically". If it still doesn't work, phone telkom @ 0800 375 375 and ask them to reset your port. When they tell you to phone your service provider first, tell them that you already did and that they told you that you need a port reset. Then do the flush DNS again. Hope that does it.;)

That sounds like a disconnect/reconnect by your ISP. Which ISP are you using? Is it a local only account?
