I am having an Internet problem that I hope I can get some help here.
However the problem is erratic and is very frustrating.
I am on TELKOM ADSL and have an old ADSL WI FI modem that was part of the original contract. The modem has a fault in that the on off switch won’t engage and I have taped it down as to be always on.
What happens that after switching on the modem it usually takes a few minutes to sync in and connect? (I always switch off the modem and unplug from the wall when not in use). Then I try opening a browser but 90% of the time the home page will not load (using IE 8). I usually get the following message on the webpage; “DIAGNOSE CONNECTION PROBLEM”.
To get round this what I have done is go to “my network places”, bring up Local Area connection, disable it the enable it, then reopen the browser. I then am able to load the home page but am limited to about 2 or 3 loads. So each time I want to load a page I have to disable and enable. This allows me access to the page. On IE 8 when the page won’t load I get the “DIAGNOSE CONNECTION PROBLEM”, message. I also get the same message if I try 10.0.0.2. When I have managed to get on to 10.0.0.2, after much disable/enable, the user is correct and all the settings.
After the first call to ADSL help line on Saturday night I was informed that there were exchange problems in my area and that it would work once it was fixed. As I never believed this I called again last night and got a more informed consultant. We went through a series of tests and to cut a long story short he decided that I had a virus in IE 8 and suggested I use Firefox. I did a few “ping” tests with him and I could not get any results from any local sites but I could ping to 10.0.0.2.
Anyway somehow or other I managed to download Firefox ( lots of disabling and enabling) but after installing it I could only access 1 or 2 pages and then it would come up with a timed out message or just freeze.
So please can I get some answers? Is it the Modem or what? How come I could successfully download Firefox without the download (8MG) timing out if the modem is faulty? What new one should I get, I guess I do need one as the on/ off button is broken and it’s out of Guarantee. I do not play games but use full 5gig allocation each month.
I am writing this from work, its my home ADSL thats the problem
Thanx in anticipation
