ADSL costs in Australia

Telkom explains the high cost of international bandwidth and the fact that we are so far away from America and Europe as the reason for the high ADSL costs here.

Looking at the world map - I notice that Australia is as far away from America as us and even further away from Europe. However, ADSL is much much cheaper there.

See http://www.ciadsl.com.au/soho.shtml - exchange rate is 1AUD = 4.917ZAR. For $89AU (R438)per month they get a 512k service with no download limit and restricted speed after 6Gig.

Sounds like a far better service than what we get here, and for half the costs.

Australia is a good example.

One think that I have been wondering about is line rental and the cost to adapt the exchanges to be ADSL ‘ready’. I can understand that the cost of bandwidth is more expensive from SA, but surely the cost of the physical infrastructure is the same. ADSL runs over already installed telephone lines in most cases, and labour is cheaper in SA than in any European country. But for the ‘physical’ part of the service (line rental) we are paying more than the full package overseas. Am I making a mistake somewhere in my argument? I know we have discussed this previously, but would like to include this in my response to Telkom, and would therefore like to get my fact straight.
