Been experiencing this for the last couple of weeks. Everything is fine and then for no apparent reason it drops and you can see on the router the adsl light flickering its little light of.

Spoke to Telkom and they said speak to your ISP then after i "politely" swore at them and said listen to my voice its not the ISP they then proceeded to tell me to reset the Router. I hung up on them and roamed the net for answers.

Had to phone them again today and they guy told me to phone 0800 500 200 and ask them to lower the speed of my line from 4mb to 3mb or 2mb. maybe that will let the line to be more stable. Phoned them and the women told me she only deals with the internet not ADSL, after 10mins of arguing with her i put the phone down.

So mybroadband friends can someone please give me some proper advice?

Mine does the same when it rains. Obviously an "exposed connection" somewhere. Try getting Telkom to fix that....

I am also getting this.

I have found taking the phone line out until the lights go off on the router, and then putting it back in to connect fixes this.

My ISP is Telkom and I am on 4Mb. I realised my attenuation and SNR values are high, but I have been on 4mb for more than 2 years now without a problem....

I'm thinking of calling up the techie and getting him to change ports for me on the DSLAM or whatever it's called..

There's NO WAY i'm downgrading the speed of my line..It's been perfect on 4MB for 2+ years..

Values:
Code:
Data rate (Kbps)
DL:4096 UL:512

Noise margin (dB)
DL:11.9 UL:7.0

Output power (dBm)
DL:19.8 UL:12.1

Attenuation (dB)
DL: 56.0 UL: 30.0

^ My connection also used to be much more unstable after/when it rained.. But i don't get that problem now thankfully... Only this problem of just freezing exactly like the OP stated with the light going crazy flickering... It's intermittent as well.. One day its fine, the other day it's not

yes. speak to someone who can speak afrikaans. if you're not afrikaans, it's worth the effort to not speak to a dumbass

Ja i know its pointless phoning them..."I only deal with internet sir", now wtf is ADSL then?

Anyway before i get angry all over again. Its just confusing the hell out of me because it doesnt make sense to me why it will drop for no reason.

noob alert - how do i find out those SNR and Attenuation values?

Phone 375 375 the whole time. You will eventually get somebody to drop your line speed.

Oky so the gf told me now she hears a scratching noise while on the phone, i also heard it this afternoon but thought it might just be a connection a bit loose somewhere.

So what to do? Change the pods filter? Or phone Telkom again?

been happening in durbz westville area for like the last 4 weeks i assume its due to upgrade's to imfrastructure have logged one fault report was sorted out shortly afterwards but it still happens hopefully this means 8mbps here we come...

Yeah true, it has been like the last 4 weeks or so. Cowies Hill too. Once or twice a day.

Have had the same issue for months, it was really bad before had the telkom guy over and he fit a new Adsl filter but the line still scratches and disconnects are a daily occurrence. The truth is that the network infrastructure is decaying I would say, I'm on 384k.

The Cape callcentre is better and that may be a good way to remove the dummies from the equation. I don't think some have a clue and are just bums on seats.

had the same issue quite a few years back when i got adsl and was disconnecting when it rains. after going through blaming my non-telkom router to my non-telkom phone, i forced them to come and do a signal test from my phone to the pole and the pole to the telkom box on the street. they finally found out it was the cable from my phone to the pole...after that no issues. Tell them to check the cabling for you since you are 'renting' the line from them.

That sounds like the pots filter to me. R55 for a new one, try it...

Do you have a filter for every voice device? You need one for every single device.

Do some tests. Unplug all phones in the house. Only leave the router plugged in. Do you still get disconnected? If not then your problem is with the filters. Otherwise do as the others said and post your line stats - we can then tell you if your line is dodgy.

J
