Hi, i have a friend who lives on a farm about 20km from Bothaville, close to Kroonstad, now he has internet, but it is more off then on, he pays quite a bit of money for this, but it is just more of a let down then a winning combo. ok, what he currently has is (no names) one main mast with a corner reflector antenna, facing the telkom tower about 10km away. also on the main tower a 45degree flat antenna, which faces between his house, and his fathers house. at each house they have a pole with an flat panel antenna, and it connects to a modem, or router, and then to pc. i hope u are still with me, kk, so from telkom, it still goes back to town, where it connects to the normal adsl.
now this connection looks very strong, but the amount of packet loss is enormous, he will have connection for two min, and then nothing, so it disconnects the whole time.

ok, now the question, do any of u know how to get a better internet connection to him? what is the basic workings of the satellite internet?
is the cost enormous?

any good info on this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Satellite is expensive and slow (ie latency) its not a good option at all.

How is he connecting at the moment? You mention "telkom" and "antenna" so i'm assuming WiMax? We can only really help you if you give proper full details.

Whilst I can't stand WISPs that operate in the built up areas - they have been able to fill a very important gap in the rural market. I have spoken to a number of people who have been very happy with the broadband service they get via a WISP to their remote location.

The WISPs tend to operate in very localized regions so your friend will have to make enquiries with the local IT community. I know that WebIntact are franchised all over the country so that may be a good place to start looking.

telkomspacestream express = ok-ish.

Its not made for gaming , its not made for leeching. The latency is bad and the packetloss is around 5-8% during office hours.

i've got a Transport Company 100km north of Kroonstad - they were all on GPRS - switched over to SSE512
http://www.telkom.co.za/common/pricelist/prices/local/spacestreamexpress_op2.html

using a 3 year contract it is about R1330 p/m - 3gb limit - i wouldn't say 512 - rather something like 128-~256kbps.

*so that is an option...

*or you can try a 11dbi antenna from poyinting with a 3g datacard and hope to get EDGE.

*or you can draw your scenario - with as much detail as possible - post a picture on photobucket - and we try again....i'd use grid antennas with routerboard/linksys AP's

there is also an industry directory on www.wapa.org.za which may help

thanx for the info guys, yes, you see , i actually didn't want to give names, as it would just give them a boost on website hits, and make them good, where in actual fact, they are not. but anyway,it started of with the company www.ctec.co.za and after some hassle , i am not sure of all the facts, some guy moved away from them, and its now under www.btbits.co.za.

there u can see some pictures of what kind of stuff they offer, but its not all as what the pictures show, only the one picture of the corner reflector is right, the rest looks like stuck together boxes, but i suppose it does the same.

so let me paint the picture a bit better, ill try, i am not to sure of wifi, or wisp, or whatever the rest may be, maybe u can see straight away what it is, but my knowledge regarding hat is to limited. anyway, it starts of in town, where there is a normal adsl line or router at the exchange, from there it is routed or transmitted out on a antenna, i suppose a corner reflector facing a telkom tower, which is 10 km out of town, where it again is received and relayed to his farm, so basically a back to back antenna signal booster, at his farm he has a mast on which another corner reflector is mounted where he receives the signal from town, but obviously relayed trough the telkom tower outside of town, from this mast on his farm, there is a router mounted with it, which in return sends out a signal on a flat 45degree rx/tx antenna, his house and is fathers house has a pole on witch a flat antenna with a router is mounted, and then connects to the pc. jeesh, this sounds weird. anyway, i wish i could draw a picture, cause i understand them better, hehe. so, it sounds very weird but is hard to explain, or i am just doing it wrong.

so basically, adsl in town, relayed outside town at n telkom tower(i suppose it could have been any tower, it just happens to be telkoms tower) at his farm a mast with router and at his house, receiving and sending it back again.

oooo, i can see plenty of people laughing , whatever, u guys know these things, and i don't. thats why i am asking

ok - stay with wireless.

i'd do some troubleshooting:

basic test:if you don't know routerboards/linksys AP or whatever it is:

do basic -t ping tests:

sounds if you have town<->tower<->farm or a<->b<->c

so: 1)ping b -t form a b=ip of router check packet loss
2) if possible go to b - and ping a -t and c -t respectively

if you have panels - replace with grids

aaa, i see what u are saying, test to see where the problem is, will do that.
re the antennas, i will see where he can buy them, is there a specific name for them, like 6 or 7 or whatever yagi, or is it just an grid antenna?
do u maybe know of a place?

I would look at optimising the type, direction and polarity of the antennas to improve the signal to noise ratio.

www.dbg.co.za

combine http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=165

with

http://www.dbg.co.za/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=53&products_id=107

email them - and ask them if they can just organize all the connectors ect , and that you want to combine those two ..

just figure out which segment is the problem to be replaced ...like the previous poster said -might be alignment/polarization issue.

just remember ..its a routerboard level3 - you have to fork out another R250-R270 odd to get to level4 (software key) which enables AP mode.

or you can ditch the routerboard idea - and go linksys AP route - but DBG doesn't do that anymore.

have 3 links at home with linksys AP's 9km link....works like a dream.

thank you very much, all of you.

i am enlightened, and i know i will get my buddy connected the better way.

thx
