I might be letting out my place, and I have an ADSL line in there already.

What is the step going forward to allow the tenant to have the line, but pay for it himself?

At the moment I pay the bill online, and it gets invoiced to me and my email address.

Would I just need to change teh email address on the online profile? Or give him access to the online profile?

Has anyone done this before?

Cancel your account he can go and get one himself, it is really easy. Otherwise I know Telkom used to have a change of ownership form were you could transfer the account, but I don't know if they still do this.

I'm not sure but I assume you would have to transfer the line to his name. If he decides to not pay the bill you would be held responsible as the line is in your name.

Yeah, the line is more my problem, rather than the actual ISP account. Will cancel that with Afrihost. Just wanted to see what the options were with regards to the actual line.

The line itself also needs to be cancelled. What the tenant does with it after you cancel it is up to him. Whatever you do, don't just leave the line in your name.

I see. Thanks for that. Thought I had to leave it in my name.

It would be quicker if the line was simply transferred to the tennant.

You can do this, but what happens if the tenant leaves and you have to rent to someone else. Then you have to do it all over again. Keep it in your name and add it to monthly bill. He can get his own dialup.

No you don't. If the tenant leaves then he simply cancels his account and then it's up to the next tenant to reconnect the telephone line. I promise you, if you keep the line in your name as the landlord you are in for a whole world of pain.

+1

OP is forgetting that a ADSL means that there is a normal line e.g. telephone calls.

Business plan
1. rent from OP
2. line not in my name
3. sells international calls at 5cents a minute
4. vanishes.
4. profit !

When you rent out a place nowadays, it is based on a minimum of a year or even 2 year contract. This not a motel room rented by the hour. You also ask at least 2 months deposit, so no one will be disappearing after selling international calls. And finally it takes 2 seconds to bar all outgoing calls from any phone line so it can just be used for data.

Your "scam" = Fail.

Cancel it unless you advertised that it was part of the deal.

Let him deal with the **** if he wants to reconnect. I'm renting a garden flat and Telkom line is in my name no problem, will cancel when I move.

Thanks guys. Will cancel it, and let him deal with it.

Even if you sold it for a year using every minute of every day I think you would only get R26280 so no one is retiring even if it did work ;)
