Adsl For Girls

Hi there
I really love this website, always read and learnt but never registered. But however some of you guys can be mean! So please be nice.

I understand the concept of Adsl, and I convinced my technophobe mother to get uncapped adsl to help me with my matric studies ;) and skyping with friends. She told me to keep the monthly cost low or forget it and I replied, the start up will be expensive.

Silly me didn't realise what a b*tch telkom is! I'm going to go with Afrihost 1mb uncapped all inclusive.Simply because it's affordable. But they don't handle copper wire installations etc etc. No need for sympathy but I need to keep costs low because I don't want to kill my single mother with cost.

Anyways, the deal is we used to have a phone line years ago, and my Mom stopped it. She unplugged the phone, now we have a little plug there that's never used... Does that mean I have to get a full line installation again? Or can that be used for adsl?

Note that I will NOT be using any voice/phone services I just want uncapped adsl. So what will the initial cost be, who can estimate. The modem, the. Adsl and whatever else I need? I need to lay it down slowly to my dearest mother.

And are there any tips that can help me? And yes I have to have uncapped, less frustration for me. Please give me tips and estimate costs..

I feel dumb posting here because you guys are super intelligent with all the latency, ping talk. I appreciate the help and sorry if I repeated a post.

If you used to have a phone then chances are all you have to do is get a new Telkom account and reactivate the line so that you have a phone number, once that's done you can start your ADSL activation process
 
What a lovely young girl! So well spoken and you seem to really care about your mom because you are very considerate. I wish more young people would follow your example.

My dear, you can go onto Telkom's website. They will give you the pricing and everything you need. You do not need to use the line for voice calls, however you will be billed for the line rental every month.

Also, go for the self install - then you get a free modem and you can install it yourself - I did it - and its super easy :)

Telkom normally run a special offer which runs for 3 months, which includes free line installation. I'm running one at the moment which goes for R399 at the moment, which covers Analogue line, ADSL line, weekender call plan and 5GB of data. You let it run 3 months and then cancel the 5GB and the weekender. Then get Afrihost to take over the ADSL portion. Job done, no real ADSL costs, apart from having to deal with 5GB for 3 months. Which you should be fine with really.

+1- take the self install Simple Plan. That's got the free installation and wifi modem, which is handy. Add Afrihost uncapped to that (or OpenWeb uncapped :D) After ~3months, switch to all inclusive if on Afrihost.

Do you need uncapped to start? Planning on lots of downloading? The Simple Plans come with free GB from Telkom...

I saw a few of those pink unicorns Saturday night.

Ok what you will need is a postpaid Telkom telephone line, that is approximately R 148 rental per month, then you will have to apply for an ADSL line, basically the same line that is converted to ADSL, but you will still have to pay the telephone line rental.

You will then have to decide what speed ADSL you want, there are various options 1Mbps up to 10 Mbps, depending on your budget try to get 2Mbps or higher.

I would suggest you visit some of the service provider’s websites as you can also rent the ADSL line through them and it is normally cheaper than doing it through Telkom. Try Mweb, Openweb, Axxess, Afrihost etc

But your first step would be to get a postpaid telephone line.
 
The postpaid analog line install can be free if you go with a telkom closer plan, which gives some free minutes over weekends and after 7pm in the week. The ADSL install can also be free if you get it via one of these closer plans.

Walk into a Telkom shop at your closest mall, the telkom employees can usually tell you exactly which closer plan you need if you explain what you want, ie. 1mbit adsl line, which is the entry package into adsl.

So that leaves you with somehow getting the modem for free :P

^this any closer plan will give you free installation, regardless of whether the copper and the phone jack are in the house or not its still classed as a new installation if the line has been disconnected.
You can choose the cheapest one without the free minutes and that will also give free installation. Buy a tp-link adsl wifi router, they are like R350 which is very cheap.
Then do a self-install and move it to afrihost, or just order the self-install option through them.
 
I wanted ADSL in the flat I live in, but the pipe for the telephone is blocked and the body corporate will not allow surface wiring. Seeing we paid over R2m for the flat and it advertises "wi-fi" which gives at best 200kb per second which is useless, I expected more. I found Telkom quite forthcoming on the phone, maybe some of you other people were rude or disparaging to the person on the other end of the phone. There seems to be a lot of negative entropy towards Telkom which I have not experienced myself.
