Hi all.

Please bare with me (know nothing).

We have a guesthouse that sometimes have executives and business men staying over. Beside their 3G, they asked us to consider ADSL.

Well, the ADSL line is finally installed.

What now? The 15 rooms are about 20m max from my computer where the ADSL line is. Don't have a router yet.

1) Do I buy a wireless router where everyone can connect. (heard that most laptops have a build in wireless connection)

2) Normal router and buy a WIFI sender (dont know the name of the thing).

3) Or get a hub with LAN cable to all the rooms?

Please help out all IT guys, advise on the best for the customer?

What would you want if you stayed in a guesthouse and had a laptop.

Thanks all

Firstly... Welkom DAWIE.:p

How many guest is staying there at any given time?
If it is not alot then you should consider a wireless router cause like you say most of the laptops these days has got WI-FI built in and it will be much better than laying cables all over the place also will be cheaper. If that signal isnt strong enough you could always buy a wireless access point aswell to go and extend the foot print of the wirless signal.

All and all the wirless will be far cheaper than laying cables.

I will prfer wireless when im at a guest lodge cause then i could sit by the pool and do some work aswell.

How are you going to control how much traffic people generate? Or is it an uncapped line?

People needing it

Thanks Snormossel.

About 3-5 that needs internet access. I think there is only 2 walls between the router and the laptop. (my wall and the guesthouse wall) 20meters.

How will I get to figure out the signal strenght?
Will the access the router signal "just like that" or will they need a password or a access code. (will anybody, even non-guest members be able to access the net then)

thanks

Uncapped...

I think I'm going to go with uncapped, saw something Imagine-ips, or I was thinking about Openweb, but Imagine-ips seem to be alot cheaper.
Busniness men don't need P2P or torrent access, so Imagine-ips could do the job.

But any other recomendation, please post it.

Thanks

Agree - go the wireless route. But have one public terminal computer near the ADSL router/modem for guests without a laptop.

Buy a decent ADSL router/modem/wireless combo device. Something like
www.billionsa.com / www.d-link.co.za / www.netgear.com .

http://www.d-link.co.za/dsl-g604t.php
http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/AGDualBandWirelessRouters.aspx

Thanks for the sites. But what can I do for people with laptops without WIFI connection. Is a WIFI connection a standard on ALL laptops?

And laptops without WIFI, is that only old ones? How old?

Thanks

Dawie,

20m and 2 walls should be fine with a decent wireless router. I use a cheapy Gigabyte one, with 1 concrete slab and about 6 walls inbetween the router and notebook, and it works fine.

I would suggest using MAC address access control on your router (probably the easiest in your case) whereas you specify the MAC addresses of notebooks allowed to connect to the router. Maybe ad the question on your booking form, so you can set it up prior to the guests' arrival

Most of the bussiness men will have laptops with WIFI. Otherwise just have a PC next to the router that they could access and check their mails like that.

Sent you a PM.

Daai is baie admin werk oom Landy. Just configure the router to have a wep or WPA security key on the wireless and you can just give them the details/password when they book in that night/day.

No offence Landy:o , but Snormossel's access code/WPA security sound alot easier for someone like me that doesn't know alot about networking and security. :D

Will do a search on WPA security to find out more.

Thanks

No idea about how many laptops have WiFi but you can always just buy 1 or 2 USB WiFi adaptors that the guests can use. I think they are about R250 a pop so not bad...

My Linksys router goes through 6 Concrete walls and +- 40 meters and I still get an okay connection. I think it averages at about 8Mb link to the router which is way better than my iBurst can handle anyway.

Well, I suppose you can say that, but I use both at home, just to make sure :-)

Snorrie, ek weet ou maat!

Dawie,

I don't know what software they use, but most hotels require you to login via a webbrowser first, which will then setup your notebook, and give you access. Very similar to the way you access the Mweb hotspots in Mugg & Bean and those places.

You might want to look at setting up a box with something called PublicIP (http://www.publicip.net) to control your guests access. It's a pretty good open source solution specifically for people who want to set up wifi hotspots. It's pretty configurable so you could have users register for access, or hand out passwords from your front desk. It'll also let you block things like p2p and other bandwidth black holes should you feel you need to.

Thaks Istari, I think my router will be the Billion wireless 7300G, but can't find any stock at the Matrix warehouses.

Cheers

Resellers

You can go to the Billionsa.com website and check there for the resellers. If Matrix doesnt have....
