Hi Guys

Got a bit of an issue whereby my internet freezes while anything is busy uploading. Freeze as in unusable while the uploading is taking place. Whether it be a pic sent via iMessage on my iPhone, or email attachment. It also usually gets very slow if someone else is using Skype on the line as well, sometimes to the point where it is unusable.

I'm on MWEB Uncapped 4Mbit (don't think this is relevant though).

Router Stats:
Code:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5024 kbps 507 kbps
Line Attenuation 48.0 db 25.4 db
Noise Margin 11.8 db 15.8 db

Setup is as follows:
ADSL Modem: DGN2200 (Netgear N300) - using as modem only, router is on latest firmware
Wireless Routers: Netgear N900 x 2: 1 is connected to the DGN2200 and both N900's are connected to each other

I do not believe it is a problem with the N900's, but this is a line/modem issue.

Other Setup:
Code:
Multiplexing Method: LLC-Based
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
MTU: 1492

Any advice on how to troubleshoot? I want to know whether I need to buy another ADSL modem or if I can otherwise fix this one essentially.

Many thanks

do a ping -t to 2 or 3 internet domains while the connection is inactive and while uploading,is there any increase in latencies?

username: guest@telkomadsl
password: guest

While you're on that account:
- ping -t 196.43.1.14
- Observe ping while line is un-utilized...
- Start an upload to ftp://ftp-test.telkomadsl.co.za/incoming/
- Observe ping while file is uploading...
- Open a simultaneous ftp session to ftp://ftp-test.telkomadsl.co.za/ and try download one of the test files, OR go to http://rosebank.spdtst.saix.net/ and do a speed test and observe the download speed (while still uploading as per 3rd step)

That account is unshaped for this purpose, so it should give you a good idea of the condition of your line

I expect there to be an increase in latencies, as I play online gaming and can always tell when someone is sending an email, or on Skype etc. Never used to have this problem :/

But i'll get onto that and post results/feedback ASAP, thanks guys.

TBH my 4meg you wouldn't notice a thing, only apps I know to saturate a line badly enough to kill pings is highly seeded torrents

I usually have Skype,IM,games and Usenet running at once with no issues multiple devices

Skype, IM, games, and in most cases Usenet too, won't _saturate_ your line (usenet is download anyway). It's _normal_ for pings to rise on 4Mbps if the 512k upload is saturdated, and this effect will apply to you too. Ping will typically rise between 30-300ms depending on a few factors... but unless the ISP is shaping, it shouldn't prevent downloads or bring the line to a grinding halt the way OP has

My point exactly ;)

Ok, back with the results..they do not look good!

Tried different router? Your upstream seems to be fully saturated during that sending for whatever reason

Don't have another modem to test, hence the reason I want to try and see if this modem is the problem or not by other means first before I go and buy another one.

Hi There,
Just in case the problem is with the other routers, what happens if you take them out and just connect to the DGN2200?

Regards

Tim

Definitely a problem there. I suggest trying another modem like the Dlink 2500u. If that still gives the same problem, then I imagine the problem either lies on the port at exchange (worth a try to ask Telkom to reset the port/profile), or some kind of noise/limited spectrum problem on the line causing the unbalance. What POTS filters are you using? Have you tried removing every phone device beyond the demarc, besides the adsl router? Assuming you're using LAN cable not wireless?

Thanks i'll try this. I don't mind going and buying another router, but like you say, it could be anther issue. I'm using LAN yes. Will try unplug all phones and do the test again. And then will do the same after I have asked Telkom to reset port from their side. If not, reckon I can safely assume I need to buy another router?

Thanks

Ok, some more interesting information.

If I use my Macbook connected via wireless, and perform the same test, I get the following results:

speed2.jpg

On the other PC connected directly to the same router via LAN, I get the results posted above (line becomes unusable).

What I notice on the Macbook is that the upload speed only reaches around 38Kb/s, which is probably due to wireless, so it's not reaching such upload speeds where it 'saturates' the line, and still allows the line to be usable as you can see by the download speed in this pic attached.

On the PC connected via LAN, upload speeds are able to reach 60 Kb/s + and it seems that is where I have the issue...

Should I hard limit upload speeds on the ADSL modem so that they cannot reach such speeds where they will 'saturate' my line? I see there is an option for this in my modem.

Port reset, profile downgrade to 4Mb, profile increase to 7Mb, 6Mb, unplugging all phone lines in the house, doesn't change it.... still experiencing the same problems! Going to buy a new modem now and hope that fixes it!

Let us know! And don't just buy any old modem ...

:D Any ones you recommend? I usually buy from Incredible Connection purely for their relaxed returns policy. And looking at a Netgear since all other routers in the setup are Netgear - shouldn't really make a difference though!

Thanks
