ADSL game up for Telkom

This seems interesting .....

But will it last or is it eye candy ... till the sno ?

STOP PRESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Telkom throws toys out of cot, grows up a bit and has a temper fit

Later they will try and get the flying pigs banned for flying without a licence

Dumping Telkom shares starts soon, never mind still lots to be made in profit taking

If this wasnt so sad, it would be truly comical.

Telkom believes that it should be taken seriously, and then says things like "Telkom could not cover its costs with the installation fee or by the R89 a month charged for renting a normal line"

So a normal person (with a minimum of knowledge) may well ask: So whats the difference between the cost of installing a 192k line versus a 1024k line? Isnt a 192k line just an artificially downgraded 1024k line? Why does the one cost R270p/m and the other R680p/m?

Are we really supposed to believe that Telkom would have to write off its ENTIRE R6.7bn profit if all of these proposed changes were to be implemented?
Personally I believe the only way to truly slay this beast is with UV light and a stake through the heart (garlic and crucifixes optional), not by forcing them to treat their customers fairly.

the problem with this is that icasa is going to have enough guts to take on telkom in a law suit. Without those guts we are going to go around in a circle for years.

It just wont happen

Telkom and SNO

I dont think we should be worried to much about Telkom, if they can get the SNO to comply with these things, then Telkom will have no other choice. I do believe that Telkom are going to be running around like chickens with heads, scrambling to pull things and keep things together so as not to lose too much face :D if that is at all possible. I also believe that if Telkom have to pull fingure now, and give the public everything they want, the SNO will have a big fight on their hands in order to get people to move over.

However should Telkom not comply or even show interest of complying, the current pissed off customers are going to jump ship so fast, Telkom wont have time to say "BROARDBAND" and any hopes of getting new customers will be dashed.

This is just an opinion.

Ibiwisi

I'll believe it when I see it.

As for Telkom not being able to afford the monthly costs... how on earth do operaters survive in other countries? I mean - right now Telkom is getting HUGE amounts from the ISP side of things - they are making LOADS through the montlhly SAIX income - as well as LOADS from IS, etc. etc. Operators survive in other countries by sharing. They drop costs, bring in more customers and turnover, thereby creating more opportunities and jobs, etc etc. But that's not Telkom's focus, see... the focus is more like making BIGGER margins with less turnover and dropping staff in the interim. How else can you justify retrenching staff while making the biggest profit in history.

Agge shame Telkom... Poor you!

I am 'n business man myself and I also upgrade my equipment on a monthly basis, but my prices aren't ever increasing because I upgraded my equipment...?

What will there excuse be if the equipment is paid off? Then operating costs will probably be an excuse!

Telkom is so pathetic that it is actually making me feel sick!

There whole way of operating is devilish! They are corrupt from top to bottom, but at least they catch a crook now and then...

Aag come on Telkom! Stop defending your high prices with childish and non-valid statements!

You will still make billlionzzz and billionzzz in profits. Just get the picture - more happy customers means more $$$$, but clearly all you want to do is rape your existing, unservised, unhappy en moedelose customers!

I hope ICASA knocks you off that little pedestal of yours.

All of the Telkom fans shout: HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY!!!

........... No one?

I wonder why it is so... quiet????

lol, if they can't charge for the ADSL line everyone is gonna get 1024... hehehehe... whats the bet they take for ever to upgrade it if this draft makes it as is.

We are looking for the problem at the wrong spot:

The place to start looking is why other data are so expensive.

Why is Diginet so expensive?

This is the "bottomline" for calculating any bandwidth costs in South Africa. All ISP's have to purchace data capacity from Telkom.

Sentech, iBurst, Vodacom, MTN and Cell-C have to pay Telkom. Everybody's rates are dictated by Telkom.

The real question is: Why is Telkom so inefficient with DATA COMMUNICATIONS and what are they doing about it.

Problem is the ICASA draft regulations do allow Telkom to charge an installation [`once off connectivity charge' -- point 2.3] fee that can be paid off over twelve months. So the turkeys might insist on a huge increase in the initial installation fee:

``One hundred BILLION rand for the 1024 connection, Mr Powers''

Actually, doesn't Rikus have a Dr Evil look about him?

If we were allowed to legally transmit signals across property borders and public roads, Meshing would start to increase.

Also it would allow one to share an ADSL line (monthly rental) and get everybody to have their own bandwidth. Bit slower at times maybe, but Telkom will get only one lines extortion per month.

THIS current pissed off customer is jumping ship as soon as possible, irrespective of what Telkom does. How can they possibly justify pulling finger only now? How can they demand my respect and my custom when they've been milking me and every other South African for years without any conscience? What makes them think they can suddenly buy my loyalty when I KNOW the only reason they're sudden'y shaping up is because of the competition? Because if they CAN shape up, why couldn't they do it before when it had some REAL value??

the only reason telskum thinks it cannot recoup the costs is because of the huge salaries that it pays its managers. Time for some staff cuts ... at managerial level :D

“…minimum download speed of 256kB a second. At the moment, Telkom’s services begin with as little as 192kB a second…”

I don’t want to step on somebody’s toes but shouldn’t the kB be a kb ( http://rodent.za.net/TheJournosGuideToGigsAndBytes )? And did anybody do some research on how much ADSL technology cost?

Bwaaahahahahahahaha.

So - like i have said before - prove it telkom - facts and figures - total transparency across the entire organisation that prooves that the SAIX department is not cross subsidising and that shows the actual costs.

Exactly what I wanted to know... They keep on saying they can’t regain their costs, but what costs are these? Is it the initial investment in ADSL technology (ISDN probably too, what a disaster) or the actual running costs?

Let’s take each in turn. The only way to prove how much ADSL's running costs cost Telkom is to implement your own ADSL service and compare I guess. Since we all know this is not possible Telkom can make up all kinds of BS numbers to keep their prices high. They know we cannot prove that they are overcharging us. Comparing with overseas operators is also not a valid standpoint. ADSL running costs surely is directly proportional to many factors such as staff competence, resource management, hardware costs, countries economy and even the cost of toilet paper. There is no way we can take all factors into account and say, "Telkom we think ADSL should cost you this much to set up and maintain and therefore only charge us this amount per month". They know this and hence the milking of the public.

Initial investment: I'm no business guru but should they not release balance sheets and stuff every year for investors to see? The same ones reporting profit; Surely, if they cannot recoup their initial investment there must be a means for us to verify this? Otherwise they can go on for years milking the public "claiming" they are recouping costs. What rubbish!

The most screwed up thing is we can talk all day but Telkom is hell bent on milking the public. They will stretch this out as long as possible and nothing we say or do can change that. ICASA is just as useless. They create regulations and Telkom gives them and this country the finger. Well done.
