Hi There,

The ADSL lines in Greenstone have been congested since around the beginning of Feb.
Peak-hours seem to be evenings and weekends, often with a total failure to connect.

While both the Telkom Call-Center and local Telkom store are acknowledging a line problem, there is absolutely no information about when the issue will be resolved.

A fault report (incl. escalation), has blindly been ignored since the 9th of Feb.

Is anyone else suffering the same fate in this area?

When i was living in greenstone hill Thorn Valley estate There was not even Telkom lines i think the area has a massive issue and needs upgrading ASAP

I live in bushwillow park estate. I am getting an adsl line installed in March. The telkom technician mentioned to me that they are busy upgrading the infrastructure to 40mbp.

I really hope I don't have slow speeds. Will let you know what it's like when they done with the installation. :-)

TelkomZA sais that:

"the fault is with the cable section at present, the cable needs to be replaced.
Numerous tests is been done at present.!"

No info so far on ETA.
Does anyone else have any knowledge about this?

After all, the lines are only 2-3 years old and a new DSLAM exchange was recently installed on Stoneridge Drive (although it has not yet been switched on)... I suspect that constructions at the new "Greenstone Ridge development" might be responsible for the damaged cable. But this is only speculation....

As strange as this is going to sound, wow I'm happy I found this post. I was starting to loose my mind wondering whats going on.

I've been having basically the exact same problems as mentioned in the original post. I've downloaded a program called PingPlotter and have been running that over the last couple of weeks, and yeah results are scary. Packet loss occurs on the very first hop, which is why I'm blaming the ADSL line. (I have tried MWeb/Afrihost/Openweb accounts for completness) My results are roughly something as shown below.

* 8am to 4pm - Intermittent packet loss, enough to make YouTube difficult and gaming a bad idea.
* 4pm to 12am - Serious packet loss, depending on the night sometimes 100% packet loss during this period, i.e. the line is dead
* 12am to 8am - Everything is 100% A-OK. Low latency, no packet loss, as if no problem existed.

I came across this post on myBB which could maybe help or at least give you something to bug telkom with.
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/591039-Edenvale-Exchange-Issues-Again!

Either way I've logged a fault with Telkom on the 3rd of Feb, and have been waiting ever since.

Any updates from anyone else would be much appreciated!!!

Did you know that you could also run your tests on the telkom guest account? This way, you exclude the possibility that it might be your 3rd party ISP. ;)

TelkomZA has requested feedback for projected ETR from the area manager. I'm waiting for his reply...
Also, at the Telkom store in Greenstone I was told that they were to have a meeting on Wednesday (yesterday), about this situation. I'm on my way there to get some feedback.

Moving out of greenstone a few years back did wonders for my Internet! No regrets! :p

Thanks a lot for all the effort! I'm eagerly awaiting their response. Really hoping for some good news.

Thanks again!

Hi hilrap

Was Telkom able to provide you with any useful information?

I got an SMS from Telkom on Friday saying my incident was resolved, but sadly it wasn't. Still exactly the same problem, so now I have logged a fault with Afrihost as well as the Telkom incident.

Oh I also came across this on Friday. http://hellopeter.com/telkom/complaints/adsl-useless-for-over-2-weeks-with-indifference-1339888

Kind regards

Hi,
Unfortunately no concrete information from Telkom. The store claims, they no longer receive updates from project managers, as they are too scared to default on schedules...

My fault was also canceled on Friday... The line was back to normal for about 3h and then dead for most of the weekend. Only able to connect after midnight... I've logged two new faults since. One got canceled on Sunday  ) ... Received a call today from Telkom and was promised a technician for tomorrow... Yet, they honestly claim there is no indication for congestion on the exchange and that the cable fault was repaired....

Will have to wait for the technician.... if he ever shows up... As I'm typing this, the line is dead, like every evening, since about a month now.... :(

One more thing. I'd advise you to log your faults as "No Service", rather than "Intermitted Service". In my experience, on a "no service", Telkom at least makes the effort to give you a call. While faults submitted as "intermitted service" just gets your report ignored and canceled...

What range are you guys on? I am on 011-452 and have not felt any congestion until Wednesday this week. Latency goes through the roof after 19:00 in the evening. Tried Telkom, Afrihost, MWEB accounts and all of them shows latency on the second hop which points to congestion.

On Wednesday I'll be getting my line installed. Apparently they allocated me a 452 number. So will let you know what it's like.

609...

Telkom just gave me a call and confirmed problems with the line. Yet, once again nothing concrete as to where the fault is and how and when it will be resolved...

It's been a month.. .so frustrating...

My latency seems to back to normal again. I cannot imagine what it would feel like to have to deal with this for a month.

Telkom are on their way here. Will keep you all posted. Anything I should ask the techie?

Perhaps ask the techie which DSLAM/UMC they will be connecting you to? Except for the two new MSAN cabinets on Stoneridge Drive (not sure if they are live yet) the only other I know of is the Telkom room at the Emerald estate gate, the Telkom room at the Strelitzia complex and the Telkom room at the Greenstone mall.

Okay I will ask thanks. Good lord they are useless. Techie phones me and says my number they have allocated me us faulty. Wtf

I'm also on the 452 range and have been having these issues since the national line speed upgrades were complete in late Jan.

Strangely though, my news downloads are running at full line speed according to SABNZBd (~410kbps), although admittedly this was in the early hours of the morning.
All other traffic is *** slow.

I even bought a 2GB Afrihost account to make sure that Telkom ISP wasn't the issue, but it's definitely the line.

Perhaps you can ask him when we'll be able to upgrade to 10mbps? The last time I asked, the call center oke didn't know, but maybe the techie has more information.

Thanks.
