Hi guys

I recently moved to a new apartment, which has a Telkom line.
I just came off the phone with a Telkom sales rep, and he said that the installation cost of R700-odd has been waived?

He said it's determined based upon my credit rating.
Is this normal? I though there was always an installation cost?

It's installation always free with most of the product offerings?

It's only the "unnecessary call out fee" of about R800 i remember hearing about?

Did you sign up for one of their promotions or a contract?
Only ordered installation, and explicitly told them naked ADSL.
The guy did not mention anything about that.... Telkom's promotions page also doesn't list anything related.

He mentioned pricing in the range of R700-odd, but when I just calculated the total cost should be R582,
I've been sold lies, right?

There is no such thing as Naked ADSL in South Africa (yet).

Looks like they waived your deposit.

You are still going to pay for that installation!

I advise you to phone back and confirm exactly what has been captured on your order. Sounds like a POTS service only with no ADSL.

The R700 off is usually a half price installation discount. Or thereabouts, based on your credit rating. You still pay the remaining portion, which for an ADSL installation is usually around R800. Please confirm this.

But, if you went with Telkom as your ISP some accounts offer free installation, so you'll need to confirm.

Okay, phoned them again. Rep seems rather rude and persistent trying to explain my order.

They have the ADSL rental, and the line on a "Closer x" (3, I remember vaguely) plan, which waived the installation costs.
Trying to get the "plan" from their website is hard, but following the rep's transcription the total cost would be R601.
As explained, and confirmed, it would be a month-to-month contract with a threshold of 3 months to cancel.
The price difference is R15 per month. Over the mandatory three months I would pay R45 extra, instead of the installation cost.

By my calculations It seems logical to take that approach, correct?

Correct.

If take just the ADSL line with them its +-R140 and you have to pay the R700 installation charge. If you take the closer 3 then its R165 no installation charge.

Went through this quite recently with Telkom...took me a day or 2 to get a straight answer.

Sounds better!
And yes, your logic is correct.
