I was thinking of moving over to a ADSL fixed line since 3G is just to pricey for the amount of data I use lately...

Got the following from a Telkom outlet this morning:
- Land Line activation fee (there is already a line in place, just not activated): R468.05
- ADSL installation fee: R598.31
Total install fee: 1066.36

Telkom R U Crazy?! I only want a 384 kbps link...not a gold plated line into my house?

i posted this, this morning on another thread. for the telephone line, if you take closer option 2 (which is like R20 more per month) or above, you don't have to pay installation fees and then after the first month you can cancel your closer option. or atleast it was like this when i did my telephone 2 years ago. and for the adsl line you should be able to choose self install which is also free.

Do what I did:

- Applied for a line first, lady at call centre said there will be no installation fee if I take a Closer plan (not sure if it was Closer 2, check with them first). Did that and cancelled it after 2 months, as it's a data-only line.
- Do a self-install, it isn't exactly brain surgery. But, remember to verify your line once the ADSL line is activated. I forgot about this step, and initially got all irate with Telkom.

Worked for me and saved 1k.

yeah the closer plans still have the NO INSTALLATION COST to it, even the closer 1 plan has it and its R15 or R20 a month more, u get free minutes aswell, so kinda still worth it, the free minutes come in handy when u might need to call them or the ISP u choose

ja i actually never canceled my closer plans...know a lot of people with land lines and started to make a point of using that because the closer plan i am on gets free calls!

Yes, closer plans are actually useful sometimes, I am on closer plan 5, initialy my line was data only too, then I realized 1 300 minutes free can be very useful.

I also got the R1000 story from Telkom, so initial reaction was also "F U!"
ADSL still seems to be the better option for me since I need about 5Gb pm atm.... but I have been reluctant to go ahead..... I've been thinking I should wait another 2 months or so, to see if
a) Telkom will introduce ADSL+ , and then I don't want to go thru the whole story again, if its gonna be significantly different
b) Telkom will up the packages again... 384k becomes 512k, 512k becomes 1M, etc.
for now, the 3G/HSPA is a bit more expensive, but the much faster speeds, up and down, is more to my liking

I've been thinking.... with the Closer plans, u get like unlimited calls up to an hour (weekends?)... sooooo... in theory... if u have a dialup modem, and dialup a/c (and preferably a 2nd pc to use it), ... u 'could' let it dial up and connect for 59mins, disconnect, dial up again. If u not need the speed, then this way would be good if u want to download craploads of stuff, without affecting ur cap :)
similar to the iburst uncapped but throttled service...
not that I really have need to do this... was just pondering with the idea... at least make use of that otherwise useless analogue line

Not only weekends... after 19h00 every day.

Dial up won't work as it will register that you are dialling a POP and then bill you for it!

I upgraded from HSDPA to 384k and can honestly tell you that browsing is faster!
I had excellent HSDPA
-77db and even so, it cannot beat the latency and stability of DSL.
Downloads are slower but it does not affect me as i go to sleep or work on a 1gb download and wake up to enjoy my media.
If i left my HSDPA to download,it would only be under strict supervision as a rogue update would eat that expensive bandwidth.
It a HELL of an improvement and cannot believe i didn't do this years ago.
The only thing im dreading is my first payment to telkom for my closer 2 package...

You don't have to pay for the installation.

and whatever u do, don't take the (get free router when you sign up a 24month contract with us)

Tell them u want a month to month contract.

Get afrihost as ur service provider.

I want to sign up for a 4mbit, currently using 384 :)
Hope I won't have to pay extra here

Cheers

So please can someone detail the initial (self) installation and monthly costs if I want a 384k DSL line to use with, say AfriHost (or whichever ISP is cheapest for a 2GB cap). BTW, I have my own DSL modem. Maybe the time has finally come for me to say good-bye to Vodacom who refuse to come to the cheaper bandwidth party.

Oh yes, forgot to mention the Closer 2 package option with the DSL sounds attractive to me for the free calls which will reduce my Vodacom phone bill too. So grateful if you could include it in the cost detail please.
Thanks.

one more thing: I currently have a prepaid Telkom phone installed, which could probably just be converted to the closer 2 service ?

Thats correct, just give them a call and the upgrade will be almost instant.
Alot of people i know are upgrading to closer 2 just for the phone calls.

Thanks Demon Angel, will do soon as someone answers my original question.

Have you looked at this yet?
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?83000-Lawrence’s-Guide-to-Ordering-Home-DSL
In the adsl and broadband sections of the forum there are tons of threads about the process that needs to be followed.

Thanks, but I think that guide is somewhat outdated since it was written in 2007. Besides the process to be followed, I was actually hoping to get a better idea of the total costs, especially now that ADSL has become more 'affordable'.
