I ordered ADSL on Sunday the 10th of December 2006. To my amazement I got a call on Tuesday morning the 12th of December 2006 telling me that Telkom will install my ADSL on Thursday the 14th of December 2006.

So today (14 December) at about 15:15 a technician came to install my ADSL only to tell me that he can't do anything because ADSL have not been enabled on my line yet. He will come through again tomorrow (15th December) to see if he can finish the installation.

What now?

It needs to be enabled at the exchange. When telkom come around "to install your dsl" they do nothing: they plug the filter into the socket, and the line x2 into this. Phone line and router cable. That's all. For this they charge you 440 odd rand (what is it nowadays?) It is up to you to setup your router (phone telkom helpdesk, they'll talk you through it.)

Should phone 0800 375 375 and go "new installations," try track your installation and why it wasn't enabled at the exchange or what the issue is. Get a tracking/job number.

Pray loudly that the techie turns up tomorrow (though as said this more a benediction than anything else.) Phone them above!! (Politeness helps.)

I would rather do a self-install. Telkom charges way to much for installation.

I did a self-install and it was extremely easy and fast. Took me about 10 minutes

I also did a self installation. Easy.

If you phone Telkom's helpdesk, like kilo93 said, be polite. The techs will help you better if you aren't screaming at them. I know this cause I worked at a callcenter for an ISP...screaming and ranting just doesn't make the techie jump ;)

and the best is ..

If you are like me that will not use the landline for telephone calls then you dont even need to install the micro filter .. thats another saving of 60 odd bucks :D

Cool. My ADSL is up and running. I was working on my PC when all of a sudden I saw the ADSL led blinking on my modem.

I went through the setup, phoned telkominternet to get my username and password.

Everything setup perfectly. Did the self-install and saved myself R400+.

5 days is all it took.
:D ;)

Piesang, I would have to say, even for Telkom, that is record breaking time. My sympathies to the poor sods who still have to wait 6-8 weeks. Think of them while you are browsing away won't you. I just lit a candle in rememberance of these poor souls.

Do yourself a favour and ditch Telkom Internet. Oh you didn't sign a contract did you?

Ja nee Piesang, you were EXTREMELY lucky to get your installation done that fast. Like dawn47 said, luckily you werent one of the poor sods (I WAS ONE) that had to 5 weeks before i got mine installed....BUT.....I am a very happy camper now

I also went the self install route, applied monday, ahd dsl by friday, this was in august. Easy-peasy

Well if you have the 384kbps line I would say Cybersmart for their 3Gb ADSL for R125 and for local torrents (GreenLab) I would say an Openweb account for local only 30Gb for R121 (price decreased):D

I ordered ADSL on my girlfriend's behalf from Telkom yesterday at around 12h00. To my surprise, the technician called me today just after lunch to tell me that the line has been upgraded to ADSL. I tested the line and it's working fine. Yup, only 24 hours from placing the order to installation!
I specifically told the technician that this is the best service I've ever received from Telkom.

Ok I also want to do the self install. the Telkom guy said I can pick up the modem from any call centre. where to from now?
Can someone explain what I need to do?
