ADSL Installation

seld install great if it works out

I ordered ADSL on my girlfriend's behalf from Telkom yesterday at around 12h00. To my surprise, the technician called me today just after lunch to tell me that the line has been upgraded to ADSL. I tested the line and it's working fine. Yup, only 24 hours from placing the order to installation!
I specifically told the technician that this is the best service I've ever received from Telkom.

It totally depends on what area you in, as some teams are just very good and organised and have a good work ethic and others not, it also depends on how good the copper is in your area. But I must admit, to technicians a conversion is icing on the pudding. Think about it, the wire is already through to the house becuase of the phone, all they have to do is run 2 jumpers (scooby wire) in the exchange and jobs done, then goto to the house and plug modem in. We use to love these jobs, I think now they have contractors doing that. If you do a self install great, just be prepared for it not working due to bad copper cables, this is where the Technicians are invaluable as they will find a good pair for you, even stealing a good pair from another customer with a normal phone, and swopping it with a bad pair.

I suppose that is why my other land line these days have a crackling on it. What you basically saying bribe them for a good line?

no it is not the record the record was some1 who ordered adsl the morning and got it the afternoon it was posted somewhere.

As I have said in another thread, I can't believe Telkom charges people as much as they do for installation. After having done a self-install, I was amazed at how quick and easy it was.

Well Telkom we desperate need more operators.
I apply for my ADSL line upgrade and I was told 2 - 3 weeks to chage the exchange. By the way i am in Pretoria. +- week and a half (Wednesday 11 April) I receive a call from the technician inform me that my line is converted I can go and pick up the modem and goodies at Telkom's Office. I ask if Menlyn branch have stock and he told me all offices do have. However I left work early to get it working before 20:00 because I have online work to do for a client, but when I got there no stock. I ask the consultant to phone Centurion branch. She try to phone them but Centiriona dont pick up there phone both the numbers she try to phone. I drove to Centurion got there 5 minutes past there closing time still customers and all there employees in there. I ask the security if they cannot help me getting the modem because I need the line desperatly to do some work via VPN. He refused completely. I ask if they have stock he said yes it just arrived. about 15:30. I left it there and went back. Because I urgntly need to do some work I borrowed a ADSL USB modem and went for the self install. mmm What a surprise(Actually not) My line speed is picking up but no data. I phone I-Junction very helpfull and Werner inform me it is the data portion on the line. I phone Telkom ADSL help desk at arround 19:00 . The person pick up the phone and said that my call for installation is not complete. I told him that I did receive a call on Wednesday informing me that the line is converted. He said he cannot log a fault on the line because they still working it and I must phone back the next day. I phoned them this morning and I was told that they cannot help me they are offline. I told that I need to speak to someone immediately and I was tranfer to the Technical dept. I spoke to Ernest and he said that there is a lost of signall but it could be due to my adsl modem not plugged in. Well I have a Laptop and yes modem not on.But it was last night when I spoke to them and thet did pick up a line error. He said I must phone adsl helpdesk on 0800375373. This was the number I phone last night. Well I did phone them again.I spoke to Kim and she said that they cannot check the line cause modem is not plugged in. I told her but it was plugged in last night and I was told it is something between the exchange and my home connection and I need to phone today. She said no fault is logged . I said I know because the person last night said the call is not closed on there system so he cannot log a call. I asked her why did they then phone me and inform me that my line is converted and working and I was told this happen a lot with the self install where the Technician phone the client and said it is completed but they did not finish everything. She said she dont have the technicians telephone number but will E-mail him for further assitance . Still waiting. She promise she will phone me back as soon as she have an update.

I read on Telkoms website that the self install is actually a test to look at the sucess.(Beta/Proof of concept name it what you want). Well with this type of service this will fail.
