Had ADSL connection - messed it up singlehandedly. I don't deserve any advice but would really appreciate it.

Basics are - using a Mecer wireless ADSL router, ISP is Telkom SA, operating system is vista.

Got ADSL/broadband connected 7 days ago - no problems except a window popping up every now and then for 'Broadband Connection' asking me to enter the password and connect even though I was happily connected to 'Home Wireless' and surfing away. Got sick of it and presumed that the Broadband Connection - which I could see in my network and sharing centre - was superfluous. So I deleted it. Ooops -no more internet.

Set up the broadband connection again - PPOE mode - in network and sharing centre, with our telkom username and password and it wouldn't connect. Then I went into the modem user interface and changed to bridge mode. And now the Broadband connection connects fine - and the Home Wireless connection never went away at all - so they both appear to be working but still no internet. What am I missing? Can't face getting on the phone to telkom after previous firsthand experience of their (lack of) customer service.

Have u tried setting up the connection as PPPOE IN YOUR ROUTER SETTINGS (with ur telkom username and password), and then just allow windows to connect automatically to the network WITHOUT any broadband connections in windows itself.

If that doesn't work off hand, then we'll have to start troubleshooting.
Maybe give me more info as to how you access your modem and what error widows gives you (if any)

Thanks alkit, I did try that but no go. What does work is bridge mode, connecting through windows, it says connecting...verifying username and password....registering computer on network...and then it says I am connected to Broadband Connection, AND to Home Wireless - but when I get into mozilla firefox, explorer, i'm not connected to the internet. this is with my laptop connected to the modem by ethernet cable. And there is no modem error message.

do a ipconfig /all and check what your wan ip and dns is

OK here's what I got:

IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.34<Preferred>

DNS Servers: 192.168.1.1

Does this shed any light Lord Fubar?

Those look to me to all be PRIVATE IP addresses

Maybe the router is not NATTING

Lets wait for the "Lord"

if the modem is bridged then ipconfig /all will give you the WAN ip as well. you will basically have two connections, one to the isp and a LAN ip connecting to your router. if it's not bridged then ipconfig will only show your LAN ip but you can still see your WAN ip in your router config by typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser address bar. the default username and password is admin and admin (if you haven't changed it yet do it now)

if it says registering your pc on the network and then the displays that you are connected but you cannot browse then you either have been capped or you have some invalid proxy settings in your browser, could be dns as well . . . ping www.google.com

if you get a reply then use the google ip in your browser address bar, if it works that way then it is a dns issue.

thanks...and one more thing

Turned out to be a case of the most obvious thing is the one you don't think of. I was capped - nasty coincidence that it happened as I was setting up the connection again - so now I have internet and all is fine - thanks guys for the advice.

HOWEVER the second computer on the wireless network - my housemate's - even though we didn't no near its settings or change anything, is not now connecting to the internet - although it connects to the wireless network fine. Pinging google doesn't work either. Anything we should try or are we just cursed?

If you have bridge mode on, then every computer has to have its OWN PPPOE dial up connection set up. My suggestion to u is to set up the router to do PPPOE and it will then share the internet connection over your whole network

If yiu use routed mode all machines will be capped at once because you are all using the same account, if you use bridge mode then each machine is capped individually.
