I am so very technically challenged - that this may not even be the right place to ask this.

I am setting up a basic IP cam in my home. One camera, in a single position. I have ADSL, with a NetgearDG834GUv5 router.

Following a youtube video, I have managed to setup everything, and am now at a stage where I can live view the camera from my browser, when connected via wifi to my router.

Now I want to be able to view the camera from anywhere else on any connection, over the internet, i.e. not specifically from my wifi connection.

I am told, I need to change and make static the camera IP address to match my LAN IP address. I know where and to set this up on the camera.

My problem is that the router says my LAN IP address is something like 10.0.0 etc. Based on the tutorials I am expecting to be using something like 196.52.77.1 etc

How do I find my LAN IP address that looks like 196.52.77.1 etc I tried changing the cam setting to static IP and assigning the "Domain Name Server" from the router page, but that doesn't work.

You will need a dynamic DNS service.

I read that in one of the google search results. Was hoping it wasn't the solution. But if it is, and if I went thru the pain of understanding dynamic DNS; would this work: freedns.afraid.org

Be very careful when exposing any devices to the internet. Ensure you change the default password on both your router and the camera's DVR or you WILL get some nasty people doing nasty things to it.

Set camera IP as static, outside your DHCP range, will be 10.0.0.X or 192.168.0.X depending on your router config. Then setup a dyndns account. Then setup port forward on your router.
Then you should be able to access it over the internet on your dyndns url, if portforward was setup correctly.

Thanks guys. Based on the above, I have enabled DNS on my telkom account. Ran into a problem again.
As per details on my account page I have entered into the router [I hope I am guess the personal part correctly and not giving away my details :) ..like I said technically challeged ]
Hostname:reserved_online****.mydns.telkomsa.net
username:reserved_online***@****telkomsa.net
password: ???

Now it says either "invalid username and password" OR "No update action. There is no IP address on the Internet port." after I reboot.

Just wish I could get the telkom one to work. I enabled the dynamic dns more than 6 hours ago. Rebooted the router a zillion times but still getting "Authentication failed. User Name/Password is not correct."
Tried every suggest in google results incl. username as username given on telkom dddn page without everything after the at. No joy.

Where exactly did you type this username and password into the router? You should not have to do that at all for telkom dyndns to work. (or does it not work like axxess dyndns?)

Netgear router has a setup field for DDNS

Dynamic DNS
Use a Dynamic DNS Service

Service Provider
Host Name
User Name
Password

You don't need to enter anything here as you are using Telkom's DDNS. The hostname should automatically resolve to your IP.

Thanks. I removed that. (included the use ddns checkbox at the top).
I setup the service:
Name:
Camera
Type:
Start Port
8080
Finish Port
8080

Then under firewall rules allowed the inbound service.
Service Type: Camera
Action:Allow always
Send to LAN Server 10.0.0.etc

Still can't access the ddns address via browser. One question:Can I access it using the same connection?

Step 1 would be to verify that the hostname resolves to your IP. Do this by pinging the hostname and comparing that IP to your own.

Then use http://www.canyouseeme.org/ to verify the port forward.

Also do I need to enter the DNS address into the camera
