Hi,
I have a 10 Meg line, my speeds and service have been OK( for a non-Tech person)
We stream a lot using Hulu and Netflix. for the last few months, the amount of buffering has been increasing, and getting worse.
I use around 130 Gig per month, so not a ridiculous user and I am on Afrihost Capped.
Last Sunday, it took us 97 mins to watch a 41:04 episode! even Google and other sites are slow.
Speedtest is giving me a ping of 227, but 8.2 download and 0.67 upload.

Afrihost, who have always been good, now throw out the " Best effort" clause, which means time to move to another ISP.
Telkom, have found no line faults, but I see that we have around 3-5 disconnects each day.

I tested using my neighbors MWEB account and had Zero problems with buffering.

Would you think this is solely and Afrihost problem?

And second Question, if I need to move ISP, who should I use?

Thanks

Yes, all the ISPs are having problems right now.

But you can try a test account with WebAfrica if you want.

Afrihost is the problem. Try a test account (1 Gig free account) from other ISP's.

I've got a Vox capped account and I've got no issues (Ex-Afrihost user).

Afrihost and streaming have never gone together...

Thanks for the input. I tested my streaming using Telkom log in and also had no problems last night, then switched to the Mweb credentials, also no problem. I then changed back to Afrihost.......... a whole lot of buffering.

Why is this I wonder? Demand is only going to increase. Have we reached the limits of the South African network?

Telkom has changed the manner and structure of buying IPC capacity and the ISPs are all holding off purchasing to see what happens.
It's kind of a "try to outwait the other party" situation.

Going to try Vox, see if i get a better connection. Loved the Afrihost support staff( until they started the " Best effort" bull).

All I need is decent speed for streaming,

Great! Let me know if you want me to call to discuss our options with us :)

Are there any ISPs willing to tell us what is going on and how they are handling this?

I lol, afrismost

I drink too much and mostly drunk and code in the early hours.

I've been with AH for 5 years, before that webafrica, before uncrapped.
I was too lazy to check why Afrihost sucks for so long. I didn't really give a fk. But recently I was like F^CK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That song, "Because I was high" comes to mind.

MTN is killing afrismost, just do a trace or mtr

Just made a free account on webafrica and F**K wow, if Vox had a free account I would try it.

Anything is better than AH at the moment .

Still awaiting Vox to return my message, but in the interim I did the above traceroute.

I think problem with Afrihost is their congestion and possibly using MTN.

Here is my personal experience of leading SA ISPs
Bear in mind I am the normal geek who torrents etc...

MWEB - Loved it, until Hernshaw took the helm and they began to throttle the protocols and block/censor certain websites. Probably was the best uncapped experience ever
Openweb - CRAP, from the word go... fraudulent internet best sums it up. This guy shares a single account amongst users
Cybersmart- left them years ago, due to lack of IPC and bandwidth across all protocols and censoring of certain websites
CrystalWeb- These guys are nice, but they don't have the necessary IPC to support people who stream especially not if you use Apple TV.
NexusISP - IS reseller... falling foul of the star system is too easy... Their capped offerings are too expensive
Axxess - See Afrihost
Afrihost- The capped products were OK until their crap started...
WebAfrica- capped products work well, except they also have the star system which doesn't help
