ADSL- Is it just Afrihost?

Telkom has changed the manner and structure of buying IPC capacity and the ISPs are all holding off purchasing to see what happens.
It's kind of a "try to outwait the other party" situation.

Do they buy IPC capacity month to month or is it like a 12 month contract or what?

Here is my personal experience of leading SA ISPs
Bear in mind I am the normal geek who torrents etc...

MWEB - Loved it, until Hernshaw took the helm and they began to throttle the protocols and block/censor certain websites. Probably was the best uncapped experience ever
Openweb - CRAP, from the word go... fraudulent internet best sums it up. This guy shares a single account amongst users
Cybersmart- left them years ago, due to lack of IPC and bandwidth across all protocols and censoring of certain websites
CrystalWeb- These guys are nice, but they don't have the necessary IPC to support people who stream especially not if you use Apple TV.
NexusISP - IS reseller... falling foul of the star system is too easy... Their capped offerings are too expensive
Axxess - See Afrihost
Afrihost- The capped products were OK until their crap started...
WebAfrica- capped products work well, except they also have the star system which doesn't help

I don't want a lot, just stream Netflix etc and not have buffering!!!
Seeing the above, and am wondering where to now?
Theoretically Telkom should have the best and least congested network, but in reality......
will try Vox, as soon as they get back to me that is.

Interesting insight. I must say with the arrival of all the undersea cables a couple of years back and the investments in fibre by the metros etc I would have expected Telkom IPC to become less and less relevant. But I understand that while ADSL is the dominant technology it is an asset that Telkom can and seems to be determined to sweat. The response from the market must be to lay alternative fibre infrastructure (or wireless). Wireless seems snarled up by spectrum licensing, so the real alternative is surely last mile fibre?

There is evidence that Telkom is perhaps "sweating the assets" too much at the moment as the demand for fibre soars.

The bottom line is this. All isp's, the internet infrastructure, in south Africa suck compere to 1st world country's!

I made a spur of the moment call and bought the 100GB special capped VOX fat pipe. In 2 days I managed to download more than I was able to with Cybersmart in 2 weeks. 2 Weeks since and I've only used 40GB from VOX so it's not as if I am hogging the network or anything.

Had a 5GB trial account from Openweb which ran well also but I read so many negatives on here that I didn't sign up with them.

Not saying VOX is the best, just saying it works for me and has made me realise I don't need uncapped.

Great! Let me know if you want me to call to discuss our options with us :)

Am interested too. Just cancelled my 'other' account today. Need to be on new account by the beginning of next month

I can't take it anymore with Afrihost and yes I have been a client for almost 5 years with a uncapped business account. My latencies for the last month sits at a 239ms PING !!! local. I canceled my ADSL account.

I tried Webafrica and got a 5 - 10ms ping. I phones Sales just now, but you can clearly hear the sales person does not want to help you on his Saturday and he gets more frustrated the more questions I ask and just want me to go and read the FAQ section...I mean WTF!!? why are you working there then? Go get another job you tool if you don't like it. Also the other problem I got with him is that I ask him if I can only buy the 5gb pro home account to test it out and ask if they can canceled it immediately, but been told sorry it takes 30 days to cancel so you have to pay next month also. I mean WTF!? I don't want to pay next month. I JUST WANT TO TEST IT OUT THEN ONLY I will drop a grand + a month if I am satisfied. Webafrica with its ridiculous 30 day cancelation just to milk the customer because they are greedy. So you and Afrihost will not see my money. Sorry but both your business models and service delivery suck. You actually should take some time and see how ISP overseas does it, but all and most S.A. businesses have this stupid S.A. mentality to milk customers, but don't deliver on services. You don't decide the outcome. We the customers (with the money) do. Cheers.

Hey there,

Same issues with Afrihost. They were great. I always ran a capped account and they were great. They've steadily deteriorated.

Coincidentally I called WebAfrica Sales yesterday and like you I wouldn't use 'em - reasons are similar. The consultant wasn't a problem. He was realistic however it sounded like I was on the phone to Afrihost.

Vox on the other hand were impressive. So I'm wondering how much was sales pitch and how much reality.
Hoping you all can confirm...
- AH "The Telkom lines person leaves at 5pm. We'll be in touch tomorrow"... never hear from them again.
Vox indicated they'd deal with line issues 24/7 and will be able to engage Telkom around the clock.
- Call center wait times with AH are generally 15 to 20 mins.
Vox indicated 5mins would be the outlier. Typically way less than that.
- AH support never gets back to you even if there's a firm commitment.
Not sure how Vox does on this one.

So I'm wondering whether I should be moving my line to Vox.
They certainly gave a good story.

Okay so I called Vox just now.
Sure's bob - they answered within 2mins like they said they would.
The guy on the other end of the line gave a good account of himself. He was certainly more knowledgeable than the typical AH rep.
Their process to diagnose and followup on issues appears to be solid. Agents are accountable if ticket's don't have activity unlike AH.

Would be great to hear from any of you who have your line with Vox.

So Afrihost is cancelled. Just waiting for Vox to load me up, apparently must wait 2-3 days for this.

Hope i can get a decent streaming service now.

Why didn't you activate before end of month? They charged me like R20 prorata for last 4 days of the month with 16Gb which I used for torrents
