Please can you post the details of the backhaul/backbone that your ADSL ISP uses.

If you are unsure, go to www.displaymyhostname.com and copy the non numeric part of your hostname.

For example, my hostname is reported as: ???-???-???-??.access.mtnbusiness.co.za (the ? marks digits). So I would paste:

access.mtnbusiness.co.za

I will keep the details updated here:

  • Afrihost: access.mtnbusiness.co.za
  • Axxess: access.mtnbusiness.co.za
  • OpenWeb: dynamic.isadsl.co.za ?
  • WebAfrica: dynamic.isadsl.co.za (sybertiger)
  • Crystal Web: ???
  • Telkom: telkomadsl.co.za (cavedog)
  • ITNT: dynamic.isadsl.co.za (almesallaty)
  • Vox: voxdsl.co.za (almesallaty/cavedog)
  • MWeb: dbn.mweb.co.za (Soul Assassin)
  • Cybersmart: ???
  • IS Ignite: dynamic.isadsl.co.za ?

Thanks for the replies !

Vox:
DSL-197-245-**-***.VOXDSL.CO.ZA

Telkom:
TI-225-***-***.TELKOMADSL.CO.ZA

Best 2 ISP's and backbones to use in KZN. IS is not bad too. So if you are in KZN you should try Telkom or IS based capped account for the best latency and performance. Vox is ok in KZN but goes through JHB IPC which could get congested faster.

MWEB:

dbn.mweb.co.za

I don't know why dbn as I'm not even remotely close to Durban.

Crystal Web is also on IS backbone AFAIK

Let's make it easier.

Please note that Telkom Internet is on its own 'ADSL Backbone'. When we migrated to IPC, we asked SAIX to host our reverse DNS in the form *.dsl.telkomsa.net, but in the meantime they changed to *.telkomadsl.co.za.

On new IP ranges (105.184.*), and some that we have migrated(105.229.*), you will see telkomsa.net:
[ranger@media ~]$ host 105.229.4.11.4.229.105.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer 105-229-4-1.east.dsl.telkomsa.net.
[ranger@media ~]$ host 105.228.4.1
1.4.228.105.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer ti-228-4-01.telkomadsl.co.za.

This is inaccurate. We buy transit from SAIX, but we run our own IPC, we don't use SAIX ADSL.
I agree with your statement. Which means, you have your own IPC network, but your traffic is still only on the SAIX network, no peering with other networks ect, thus in my books that is you (read TelkomSA) run on the SAIX network.

:)

False. We are peering with other networks. Can't disclose details now (but if you know where to look, you will find us as AS37457), we are waiting for the completion of some transmission links (e.g. to a 2nd/3rd peering location) before we will be willing/able to peer with some other networks.

Other ISPs you have listed as having their own 'Backbone' also only buy transit from one upstream, so maybe you should clarify what you mean by 'Backbone'. The initial post seems to rely on reverse DNS (where whois would actually be more relevant), which doesn't imply any requirement to e.g. open peer ....
