ADSL Issues! Important Information

Telkom can supply you with voice and data line (adsl) so you get telephone number and on the same number you can connect and browse internet

QUOTE=jonathan2340;7730369]ADSL is pretty good. But i have no idea about it. I have not enough knowledge about it so i can't discuss about it any more..

Thanks...![/QUOTE]

You can do it this way

How do I determine line quality?

Hi. An easy way to test your connection is by using pingtest.net This will measure your connection quality by packetloss, ping time, and jitter. At the end you will get the result with a classification of your line. A is best. Take care, Ray from Nordcom ADSL Norge.

Some ISP's will take on fault reporting for you. You need to move your line over to the ISP and then never have to sit and listen to that music again ! The faults are escalated and usually at least get some real attention.
On average over the past 6 months, my adsl has been down 10 days out of every 30. I have called them. I have logged calls via Telkom website. I have been to the Telkom shop close to us. My problem still exist.

What else can I do? Where can I log a complaint at Telkom?

I have a billion BiPAC 7300W router and continually get "link down" It is sporadic but seems to be getting worse and also is much worse in the evenings. Dropping connection every 5 minutes as im typing for periods of roughly 1 minute. Im wirelessely connected and signal strength is "excellent" Please help me.

I have just upgraded firmware to v2.04b-7m and no dice.

Agree, but there's a even better way...

You can do a speed test when going to either of following links -
a) http://www.telkom.co.za/products_services/dsl/support_speed_test.html
b) http://speedtest.net/

Make sure that your connection is idle (i.e. nothing else downloading) when performing these tests.

Hi. Speedtest.net is good, but sometimes I experience slower speeds depending on which server it chooses, and I have been told that Java tests very often shows less speed that what it should.

What I use to do is to find myself a really good torrent (high number of seeds, and low number of downloaders) of atleast 100 MB, and start the download to see what it ends up on. I usually measure between 8 - 12 Mb/s with speedtest here. But when downloading a torrent on my Mobilt BredbĂĄnd connection, I often get the double. And it is very stable too.

So that is a great way to test. If you are worried about downloading torrents (illegal ones) just search for something you know that is freeware or not copyrighted material, and you will be safe.

Take care everyone, and happy testing :-)

P.S. Have a merry Christmas too.. :-)

Hi there.when I want to do a adsl service verify in telkom.co.za, show me flowing message : ADSL availability and maximumspeed supportedby your exchange cannot be determined at thisstage, for residential please contact the ADSL callcentre on 10210 , for business pleasecontact10217 .
That means my area isn't supported adsl service? How can I do if I need a faster internet service?thanks.

I just checked availavability from telkoms site too for my new area coz im moving. Well it says Service: Not available in green text, and max speed for this area is 10mbps. At my current house which does have ADSL, i also get the message that you did bbksupermarket. maybe that telkom adsl availability checker is screwed.

I have a concern.....a 100mbps ADSL from Telkom gives me the following results:
PC #1 Ping 323ms DL:43mbps UL: 41mbps
PC #2 Ping 291ms DL:48mbps UL: 41mbps
PC#3,4 and 5 did not do a test and
PC# 6 Ping 323ms DL: 20mbps UL: 38mbps

All the above done on Speedtest.net from East London to Cape Town, test done once all pc's started up, nothing downloading or uploading? This seems to be very slow??
Any ideas?

Second phone on an ADSL line?

I may not be posting this in the correct place but here goes.
I have 1 phone on my ADSL line and would like to add a second phone for upstairs. When I put a second unit on the line my ADSL slows to about a quarter of its normal speed. I'm assuming (non techie) that the second phone puts too much load on the line. Is there a way around this problem?
Thanks,
Peter

Hello

Have you plugged each phone into an Adsl filter else it will most certainly double noise on the line and thus slow the speed. No over load just noise. Isolate each landline from Adsl line with a filter.

Would it correct to say that a drop in my SNR margin would affect my attainable rate ? I have 4mb line at home, on download stream my SNR margin was at a constant 11 and download rate at a constanct 4096 Kbps.. i used average between 3 - 3.5mbps on speedtest.net

Last month my SNR dropped and now fluctuates between 3 - 9. my download rate now fluctuates between 3500Kbps - 3700Kbps

Also strange is ADSL2+ setting was always enabled by default on my Dlink 2750u router and the MAX attainable rate was 8000Kbps.. now the Max shows 3700Kbps... also if I disable ADSL2+ on the router i get a slight ( 100 - 200Kbps) speed improvement.

I haven't changed anything in my house so I'm thinking there is a line issue outside somewhere but telkom does line tests and tells me everything is fine and within "acceptable parameters".

I'm not giving up the fight yet but am correct in thinking something must have happened last month to that caused this drop in performance ?

Software for Netgear Router

Hi there

i have a Netgear DGN 2200 v2 router (purchased many years ago from Telkom but still woks like a bomb)
with a 4 GIG uncapped contract with Telkom.

However last month my kids hit the 250 GIG cap and we got shut down by Telkom!!!;)

Anybody know of software that can keep track of the usage (per IP adress) including cell phones x box etc.

Any feedback is apprecated

Contradiction much?

Drop telkom and get a proper ISP that wont "shut your internet down"

By shut down do you mean its slow or unusable?

Telkom shuts it down as the home page gets re-directed to their "usage" page
and if i log in it tells me you have uncapped acount and we dont provide a usage service for uncapped accounts !

You say proper ISP any suggestions ?

i have been very happy as far as service and speed is concerned
