Howzit Guys,

I have 2 ADSL connections here at home, I have heard about Line Bonding, but my question is, is it possible to do it in SA? Apparently for this to work Telkom needs to have MLPPP. My guess is that they do, because companies like Vox are offering line bonding solutions, but is it possible as a home user?

My next question is, what router can I use and can I get it locally? I need to have a router that is Wi-Fi capable aswell.

Thanks in advance for the all the help.

The people "next" door to us have 5ADSL lines for 5x the speed of 1 :O so it can be done I just am not to sure how.

lol...thanks for the responses. ;)

Now I just need to know what Router I need....

Dlink has one, they go for about R800 or so. you still need to purchase 2 ADSL modems with them for about R350 each, but it is doable

Hi There,

Thanks for the reply - could you just elaborate a bit more please? I thought you plug both telephone cables into the 2 WAN ports on the Line Bonding router? I have a router at the moment, a Netgear one and I can get another one from Telkom for free, but why would I need 2 routers?

Thanks

As far as I know Telkom haven't enabled Multilink PPP on the network as yet, VOX and others are doing it another way, basically they create a tunnel across the many ADSL connections to their data centre, and then bond your connection there and then you go out with their bandwidth from their datacentre.

I think we will get ADSL2 here before we get MLPPP enabled on the network.

You could try multiple modems and a software app to mange that for you and Integrate the network to have all the lines on 1 account because it is possible to have more than 1 person per account.

Do a search for line bonding on this forum and you will see that it is a load of ****. It's not true line bonding, but more like load balancing between the adsl lines. If you have 2 x 4mbps adsl lines, you will not get 8mbps download speeds, but you will be able to download 2 files at 4mbps simultaneously.

You do get true line bonding in this coutry but there's only a couple of service providers that offer it.

You'll need a specific SP to offer it for you and they will most likely provide their own equipment. The pricing to do this in a house I think will not be worth it.

The only other option you have is to load balance between the 2 lines but this only really works when you have more then 1 computer browsing at the same time otherwise it won't help.

Not quite, whats currently being offered is tunnel bonding (to a box in a data centre from where it goes off to the Internet). There is only one co. in SA that can provide true ADSL bonding, that being Telkom owners of the sole ADSL access network in SA, however they currently don't offer this option.

Ah ok, thanks for the help guys, looks like I will just have to go for a Load Balancing router then. If I use a download manager, that opens up multiple connections at once and splits the file into separate pieces, will it carry over some of the traffic onto the the other line? or will it still only use the one ADSL line?

Yes, a download manager that splits the download into separate pieces would download much quicker over 2 load balanced ADSL lines.

Ok I have been doing a bit of googling, this is what I have learned so far, please correct me if I am wrong;

1. A Load Balancing Router is not an ADSL Modem - correct?
2. You will need 2 ADSL Modems, which from there the RJ45 LAN Cable from each modem goes into the back of the Load Balancing Router, WAN1 and WAN2 - correct?
3. In order to get a Wi-Fi AP, I will need to buy a Wireless Hub AP, plug it into a 4 port Hub and then from the hub it will need to go to the LOad Balancing Router - correct?

Were using Fishbone. Got 4 x 4MB DSL lines giving us 16MB of bandwidth. Words like a bomb - downloaded a 3GB Win7 iso in 30 mins :D
