I just recieved my ADSL router from Webafrica and they said I should be able to use it. I plugged everything in like the quick start guide said, but the router doesn't want to sync. The DSL LED flashes and then stays green for max a half minute before dying again. In the time that the led is green, it does detect the line at the right speed etc. What is the problem possibly, and how can I fix it asap? Is it the cabling, the router, the exchange or what? This is my first tango with ADSL btw.

The box doesn't have a splitter/filter with it, but let me just explain my setup, hopefully you can explain everything because our setup confuses me. Our line splits in two where it enters our home, unsure why. Then in our kitchen is a little white box where the line goes in. Our telephone is plugged in here, but it also has another port, but there is something in that port (just like a blank point or whatever, no cable. At the other end of the line we have the same type of box, only older. The router is currently plugged in there but nothing in it's other port.

Disconnect every thing except the modem from the line and see if it syncs ( unplug the phone )
Is this a new ADSL line ??

Had the same problem when i first got my adsl, putting filter on the phone lines and leaving the adsl line clear worked the best for me.

It's not a new line, but it's the first time it's been in ADSL. The support guy from Web Africa told me telkom didn't verify the line yet and that that was causing this.

Also, when my router is switched on, the telephone itself is very scratchy.

I just figured out something else about the problem. When i pick the phone up, as if to make a call, the ADSL would actually connect? Does this mean i need the filter?

I also had a lot of static on my phone line...then a friend told me to only put POTS filters on my phone line and leave the ADSL line clear.
It solved the problem for me, now a can hear the person on the other side.

If you unplug your phones i.e. no phones connect to your line anywhere in the house...does your ADSL work?

Then i would defiantly recommend getting POTS filter for your phones.

Will check it out. Why is my ADSL only working when my phone is plugged in and picked up? (as when making a call?)

I don't real know how it all works...I just remember when i first got my line i could not connect until all phones where unplugged, then i had to buy POTS filers for the phone in order to get both working.

Mine only connects with the phone plugged in and picked up! What the hell?

I'm afraid that i have no idea how to help...guess you are either going to have to wait 10+ hours for a telkom rep to answer a call on their help line or wait til somebody that know this stuff to post a reply in this thread.

Yeah im not calling Telkom again just to be cut off when they hear they aren't my ISP. I'm thinking it's this high-open fault I read somewhere. Don't know how to fix it.

So have you disconnected every thing ???? ( phone, splitter, filter )
and just connected the modem ???
The filter is just to stop the noise from the line going to the phone ( filter only goes to the phone )
And have you verified your line with Telkom ??
