Hey guys,

I been reading through some of the old posts (2006) on adsl line details, what it should be and what not. I assume the details below means my adsl line aint healthy?

DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: G.dmt
DSL Path Mode: Fast
Downstream Rate: 4064 kbps
Upstream Rate: 384 kbps
Downstream Margin: 2 db
Upstream Margin: 13 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 48 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 14 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 1 db
Upstream Transmit Power: 19 db

What do i do to reslove this? I bought a new modem (WAG200G) to deal with the new line cause i thought the 5102G telkom modem wont...

Dsl

I had a feeling the Downstream Margin of 2 db is low though, maybe i am confusing the issue, but apparently its not supposed to be below 10.

The line does lose sync every now and then, but you dont notice it in web pages, or email etc. World of Warcraft you pick up a laggy moment, nothing serious, but battlenet your instantly out the session for that drop.

Apart from the above specs, is MTU's and QoS a major role in connection stabilty? Or is that a complete different issue?

Yeah . Downstream Margin: 2 db is a bit low.

1mbit uses up 5 db SNR*Signal to Noise Ratio* (5 db) *to keep 1mbit stable*

SO basically your line is chowing up 20 db and you got 2db spare.

Its always good to have more free, 2db free basically means your line can reach 4mbit , but doesn't alot more leeway (no more spare)

Now sometimes the noise in the line increases (wich basically means the your SNR measured in db drops) *could be cause of weather, moisture, anything really*

So if your line gets noisy then it has a few spare, best is to have 6-10 db spare. Cause then your line won't get drop, and keep on resyncing etc.

You'll start seeing the effects when you try downloading alot of data , or maybe if you and 2-3 friends try gaming online (when alot of data moves) That can also let your SNR drop, cause of the movement. But if your line is stable and is happy at 2db SNR free. Then its cool. Otherwise i would call telkom out and let them come check and test the line. Or try boosting it somehow.

That downstream margin is really cutting it fine! I'm surprised you don't get disconnected more often! Your upstream margin and att. is pretty good but downstream att. isn't too great either. But rather wait for some of the other forumites and see what they say
