I know its only talk, but I thought I'd share this with you guys.

One of my friends recently had ADSL installed at his place (512k), and he was talking to the technician.

Apparently Telkom are planning to upgrade all 512 lines to 2Mb in round about 3 months time. He didn't ask about 384, but I'd assume that'd go up to 1Mb.

In my mind its quite possible because of the 4Mb upgrade and the recent price drops from Vodacom, MTN and better packages by iBurst and such.

Don't hold your breath though!

I'll have to see it to believe it...

Or they'll upgrade them and double the price :(

This would be interesting as there is currently no 2Mb option. It was just assumed that 512 would go up to 1Mb and 4Mb would remain...

Sorry, a bit OT - I have a Marconi Telkom wireless router. Where can I see my sync speed?

This will be great. I also don't see them stuffing around with speeds like 512k any more. I mean, VC & MTN & IBURST are 1Mbps. It's only natural that they will upgrade 384k to 1Mb right?

But then again, I have also heard things from techs in the past that never materialized.

I spoke with some-one a bit more informed than a technician.
He told me the upgrades are scheduled for August 2007.

The upgrades will be as follows :
384=>512 , 512=>1024 , 4096 Trial (1024)=>4096 Permanent.

So that means no upgrade for those of you lucky enough to have a 1Mb line!

Prices will remain the same though.

4096 is already perm.. :)

And if you look on telkoms site they have 4 diff profiles for 4meg line.. If you cant sync at 4096 then you get downgraded like this:
4096
3072
2048
1024

OK, but then Telkom would maybe just make the 4Mb connection more reliable.
My source is a man named Willie that works in the Telkom ADSL department in CT.
He's very competent and if any of you are experiencing problems that needs speeding up, I'm willing to pm you his number...

Have a look at Telkom's current lineup.
They have 3 products.

1.) 384
2.) 512
3.) 1024 (4Mbps trail)

Now you guys are saying it's going to be:

1.) 512
2.) 1024
3.) 4096

The problem with this arrangement is that No.3 is, all of a sudden, four times the speed of No.2. The wireless broadband providers all have 1Mbps and Neotel has already stated that their definition of broadband is, at least 1Mbps. Also, I don't think they can afford to wait until August as Neotel will have lunched their products by then.

I think a much more realistic product range is what FaTaL said:

1.) 1024
2.) 2048
3.) 4096

I don't know, guys. Do you think I put to much faith in Telkom? Isn't the above mentioned option more realistic, considering the competition's lineup.

512k in this day and age? - I don't see that! But maybe that's the Telkom way. Who knows. Only time will tell.

What? Still no response? Please? :o

Have a friend that does adsl installations for the big evil. Asked him about it, and his response was "huh? first I heard of it"

It's fine that your line will be sync'ing at the higher speed... Where are we going to get the content from??? Int. access sucks and there is no real local content, your internet banking is going to fly but that is really all...

Is there a ISP thats offer a 4096k package ???

Higher speed is great but like all the other said before me, what will a 4 meg uncapped account be like? The price, and if, when?

I don't think telkom would upgrade to 1024, 2048, 4096.
But lets hope they prove me wrong.
And they will probably get more money out of it.
Telkom, please give us that option!

Eish - this is too early to swallow this BS in the morning. Its bad luck to quote April fools a few days in advance!.

haha LabAnimal, probably true..

One thing I did forget to mention was that the technician said they keeping that info "low". That probably makes it even more dodgey
