There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discussion about this, but current ADSL line upload speeds in SA are suk.

With a 4mb line, you get a "whopping" 50kb/s upload speed.

This is obviously a killer if you want to upload HD videos to Youtube, host a service on one of your PCs, want to work on large projects from other locations via VPN or distribute some pr0n etc.

Now I know its commonplace throughout the world that your upload speed < your download speed, but it seems as usual with Telkom, its taken to the most greedy extreme.

So whats up with this? Does it really only bother me? How can we work around it, line bonding/ADSL line options I'm not aware of?

I think thats only you because if i let my utorrent select its own speeds i can upload faster than 50kbp/s but hell it could just be a freak of nature

They don't want you to do this, you see.
It takes money away from their own hosting services.

Simultaneously killing local internet growth. I don't debate what your saying at all, its the most likely answer, its just so short sighted (surprise) on their part.

ADSL is technically limited to 1Mbps upload. So the best Telkom can do is around 940Kbps if your line can sync at that rate.

That said, Telkom could do well with providing an "upto 1Mbps" on the upstream.. but of course they are afraid of cannibalising leased line revenue as always. Or people moaning that their lines are losing synch
