while I'm waiting for telkom to install and upgrade my new phone line and adsl respectively, I was hoping for advice on a suitable wireless modem router that would connect to my laptop and ps3.

I have heared good things about netgear - telkom have these offerings:

Billion 400G and Netgear DG834GU v5. Both are priced around the same. Which one should I go for? or is there another I could consider?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks a million!

...strongly advise not to purchase a router via Telkom as they place their own buggy firmware on the devices. Search the forum for issues with Telkom provided modems; e.g. Billion 400G and Netgear DG834GU v5.

Netgear is a good option; see http://www.pricecheck.co.za/search/?search=netgear&search_category_id=0 before you purchase!

Should you be in the Cape Town area I can provide you with a Netgear modem at cost.

If you can get your hands on a router capable of running DD-WRT firmware, you could do pretty nifty stuff with it. Like the Linksys WRT54G series or the Asus WL520gU. See Gatecrasher's traffic splitting thread for what I'm getting at http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=81315
If you're lucky you could get that Asus router for around R400. Its not an ADSL modem.

I'd go for one of the Netgear routers that can run DD-WRT firmware, if I hadn't bought my modem-router already.

I bought the Netgear DGN2000 from PC International in Randburg, for R1024 incl. VAT.

I've been very happy with it. I connect to it using my cellphone, laptop, and (soon) PS3.

That's a really good price. I thought I was already buying it at the best price. I checked Kalahari, Take2, and WantItAll, and they were all quite a bit more expensive, starting from R1200 and more...

In any case, haven't heard of CrownTech before. I usually stick with the common/big online shops...

It seems like its the same one, but it could be different. Well they have a good rating on jump but I haven't used them before either :p

STAY AWAY FROM DLINK!! This router is giving me hell. Going to mail Sybaritic and tell them to give me a different brand router.
