Hi

I am looking into buying a router but will also need a modem for adsl connection. I was wondering do all routers come with a modem installed or do you have to buy a modem and a router?

For instance I was looking at the Netgear Rangemax 240 wireless router (WPNT824)...does this have a modem in it or do you have to purchase a modem on top of the router?

scratch that....the model number is (WPNT834)

Not all routers are ADSL modems, but generally if the product description says that it is an "ADSL Router" then it should have a builtin ADSL modem.

Unfortunately I'm capped [internationally] & cannot google for WPNT834, but I'm sure someone else can comment :).

No. It doesnt have a adsl modem built in. You would have to buy a seperate modem. I suggest you get the billion 7300G, excellent router and billion offers excellent support.

I use a WPNT834 that is linked to a DG834GT for DSL connectivity.

A word of caution regarding the WPNT834 though ... the latest firmware release is rather particular about PPPoE implementation and there has been reported ncompatibility problems between itself and some DSL modems ... in other words it refuses to talk to the modem.

I would recommend that you stick to Netgear modem and get a cheapie DG632 for example unless you can find a supplier with a rather generous returns policy.

Thanks for all the replies

I think I will look into the Billion 7300G seems to pretty cheap and has QOS which none of the Netgear routers have. Anyone used this router to set up port forwarding?

I think the billion router is what telkom has rebadged as their wireless router. A friend of mine recently obtained one of these and he had a torrid time trying to set up port forwarding, I actually think he still hasn't got it set up.

Setting up port forwarding on the 7300G is very easy. Have compiled a manual today so just ask and I will send it to once you get the router. :D

Your friend has got the 5102G and not the 7300G. The 7300G only came out like a month ago and is not being issued by Telkom.

Anymore questions you know where to reach me.;)
