ADSL Modem

Hi

I am having problems with my adsl modem. My dsl mode in my modem is ADSL2PLUS. My modem however does not allow me to change this setting.

The problem is that on Telkom's side they have the dsl sync mode set to multimode. This difference in settings leads to my SNR deteriorating. When I phone Telkom and ask them to change the settings to ADSL2PLUS on their side it solves the problem. The problem is that every time they have a problem on their side it defaults back to multimode.

So in summary I need a new modem which will allow me to change the settings to multi mode on my side so that I am not reliant on Telkom.

My needs are as follows:
  • General browsing
  • Gaming
  • At any given point in time 3 computers will be connected to it with a cable and at certain times up to another 2 computers or phones will also be connected through the wireless
  • Reliability is very important

Budget: Would like to get away with around R500 - but if that is not enough to get a suitable modem for my needs I can spend more. (I have no idea what prices are but as long as a higher price is justified I will spend it)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

The Netgear DG834GUv5 should allow you to set the ADSL mode to either G.Dmt or ADSL2+.
All the decent ADSL modems should have that option.

What ADSL modem do you have?

Could you perhaps log in on your ADSL modem and go to the ADSL statistics page and then post your line speed, SNR (noise) margins and line attenuation values - both for downstream & upstream?

If you are satisfied with your ADSL modem as a WiFi access point, then you can just go and buy like a D-Link DSL-2500 for under R200 (incl VAT) and then use that as your ADSL modem instead, with your current ADSL modem connected to it so that you still have a network switch + WiFi AP.

Thanks Pada

I have a Zyxel iad p2602 - The modem which came with my telkom contract 3-4 years ago.

I am at work currently so I cannot check my router statistics. But they change depending on the dsl sync mode setting on Telkom's side. I can sync at 8mb without any issues until their settings default back to multi mode. Then it drops every few minutes as my SNR gets worse.

Will G.Dmt be compatible with multi mode? (I am not really sure what multi mode is)

Also where would the best place in Cape Town be to get a Netgear DG834GUv5 my google searches did not return much.

Multi-mode simply implies that it supports a bunch of ADSL modulation techniques, including G.Dmt and ADSL2+.

So if you leave your ADSL modem on multi-mode, it would use ADSL2+ if the DSLAM supports it, and G.Dmt if the DSLAM doesn't support ADSL2+.

I'm usually forcing the ADSL modems on G.Dmt mode, because then it syncs at like 4096kbps down + 512kbps up (if you're on 4Mbps of course), where as on ADSL2+ it would sync at like 4095kbps down + 507kbps up and the SNR margins would be slightly worse - or at least this is what I've found in Stellenbosch.

G.Dmt can only go up to 8Mbps, where as ADSL2+ can go up to 24Mbps.

Unfortunately I don't know that Zyxel modem at all. My parents have a Zyxel SDSL modem though, so you can't change the modulation. :)
I won't recommend the DG834GUv5 at all! It is one of those modems that Telkom supplies, and it doesn't have such a bad ADSL modem chipset, but the router itself truly sux.

If you're looking for a new ADSL modem+router, look at the TP-Link & D-Link offerings. Currently I would recommend the D-Link DSL-2750U & TP-Link W8960N, but they're in the region of R600. The D-Link has 4x 100Mbps LAN + USB2.0 (for 3G/NAS/Printer) + 300Mbps WiFi (802.11n). There are cheaper options too, that doesn't include USB or 300Mbps WiFi.

Try and update the firmware first if you haven't already, maybe the settings you require will become available.

Thanks guys.

I think I am going to get the TP-Link W8960N next week, which you suggested Pada. Found it for just over R550

What do you guys think of the Linksys WAG120N Wireless N Home ADSL Router
WAG120N-EE ?
